    KegLand Questions and Answers

i'm interested in the the new 35L BrewZilla / DigiBoil Pro Sight Glass Distillation / Steam Condenser Lid KL25812 , a great idea. but why has the inspection port got a PPSU glass disc and a silicone seal, both of which are not really suitable for some of the volatiles produced by distilling...

    Ginger and chili beer

the powderkeg ginger beer recipe has only 1 x sliced chilli(seeds as well) in a 23L. chilli added before fermentation. but, i suppose the 500gm of fresh ginger gave it some kick as well. the powderkeg uses an MJ's as a base.

    RecipeDB - Powderkeg GB

i don't think lochan ora has been available for ages, i think i substituted whiskey. vermouth (martini?) and sherry should be in your local BWS (when you can leave home) don't get the cheap sherry, go for the $5 a bottle good stuff.:)

    Fridge running warm

i'm not a fridge expert, maybe it could be the defrost timer if it's an old fridge. they switch the fridge off every 6 hours on mine, and sometimes go faulty and get stuck. most timers seem to be located to the rear, at the bottom of the fridge. they can be turned manually with fingers or...

Basic Question on an Irish Red Ale

that recipe is not mine but copied from here(?) i think. i scale down the grain bill to 5.07kg personally, maybe i should increase the mash in to about 17.5L?

Basic Question on an Irish Red Ale

hi mhb. i use a 35l brewzilla, mash in 14.5L after the mash, i go straight to sparge, and just sparge to about 27-28L volume. i lose about 2.5L in the boil which leaves me with 25L for the fermenter. does that sound about right?

Basic Question on an Irish Red Ale

bit of a novice myself, but my one and only main (successful)brews is Screwys irish red ale if you want to compare. for a 25l batch, i use just over 5Kg of grain, so yours might be a bit light. the original is for a 28l, probably knocking about the forum but i'll paste it here.......... Irish...

    Increasing Mash pH

not really to do with an oyster stout, more for PH control. the shells are used in the fermentation stage. if the PH starts to drop, the acid dissolves the shell and maintains a PH of approx 5. it's like an automatic PH control. sometimes the wash will use 1/2 cup, or as little as 1/10 cup, or...

    Increasing Mash pH

please tell me if you've done this before or doesn't work in beer.............. i've been experimenting using oyster shells in my rum washes. i've been doing identical washes with & without oyster shells and logging the PH. hanging 2 cups of shells in a hop sock and seeing how they buffer the...

    Two fermenters same fridge

i did say it wasn't beer, yes it is bread yeast. :) yes i know those strips are a guide only, that's why i posted the accurate temps of the individual fermenters by attaching the probe to each. now that the heat band has been moved to the bottom of the fridge, there is no difference in temp all...

    Two fermenters same fridge

just checked my upright fridge, which has 3 x brews inside (not beer) heat strips on the top & middle fermenters are at the set temp of 28c (exactly 27.7C), the bottom one is showing 26c(exactly 26.2C) no fan installed as yet. the heatband and probe were on the middle fermenter. the exact temp...

    Two fermenters same fridge

ok thanks for that. my probe is sandwiched inside a piece of material taped to the fermenter (prob didn't make that clear lol) good point on insulation on fridge v freezer. i should have looked for a 'freezer only instead of 'fridge only' looking at a $30 240v slimline computer fan. fridge is...

    Two fermenters same fridge

forgive me if sound confused, but i am relatively new to this. i obtained a working fridge 4 months ago, bought an inkbird and a heatbelt. the heatbelt just sits in the bottom of the fridge and the probe is inside a piece of foam on a fermenter. when the inkbird is in heat mode, there would be...

Gas Burner - Have I bought a dud?

bunnings are usually good with refunds, maybe try another one first. as i said, we could never workout why one stove would burn bad and blacken everything and another would be ok. not used gas for a while, but in perth, but i was always having trouble with jets clogging up. the camping shop i...
