    Central West brew club interest

Sorry, must of missed this thread first time around. I'd be keen for a brew club in the area. Borenore suits me being from Manildra. Beekeepers is a bit of a stretch being out the other side of Orange, but we'll try to make any event that is organised.

    Sail & Anchor Pale Ale

No, not the Monkey's Fist crap that Woolies contract brews. Was in Dan's yesterday and noticed a range of beers I hadn't tried, Sail & Anchor. At first I thought it was the S&A stuff Woolies peddles as craft beer, just with a packaging make over. On closer inspection, it wasn't, so grabbed a 4...

    Is coopers halal?

Just thought I'd add what is hopefully considered to be some reasonably reliable information. I work for a large, reasonably diverse, organisation which exports a number of products to markets with large Muslim populations. We have obviously obtained Halal certification in order to supply those...

    Is coopers halal?

Pretty much the only two components that greatly shape my purchasing patterns are price and quality.

    Craft brewing backlash?

That's the beauty, scope for interpretation inside the style. And if it's slightly outside the style, but is a ripper of a beer, than who gives a rats!

    Craft brewing backlash?

With regards to more sessionable beers from 'craft' breweries, I'm surprised you don't see more Saisons. I looked for Saisons at a lot of different bottlos to try one to no avail, in the end I brewed one myself going off the style guidelines. It wasn't fantastic, but quite easy drinking. I'll...

Adding Recirculation - My Easy Urn Upgrade

I've been thinking about adding recirculation to my basic BIAB setup. Currently, I use a 38L crab cooker pot in which I installed a 2200W element, ball valve and temp gauge. I use the insert that came with the pot as it makes lifting the bag out easier and I can sit on a wire fridge shelf on top...

    challenger & fuggles? Ale help!

I'm not a massive fan of either Fuggles or Challenger as flavour additions, but find them both great bittering hops in English style beers. Do you have any EKG or Styrians? Dr Smurtos Landlord uses Fuggles for bittering and those two for flavour/aroma. I'm currently drinking a version that has...

    Small black blobs in trub?

Did you dry hop commando style? Some hop particles can make there way to the bottle / keg if so. Nothing to worry about if that's the case.

    hopping and crashing

My fermentation regime for a standard Pale Ale is 7 days @ 18c, 3 days @ 20c, 4 days @ 0c, with dry hops added at the beginning of the chilling phase. I'm quite happy with the aroma I get from this procedure.

temp probe outside or in fermenter?

What are you measuring the temperature of???

temp probe outside or in fermenter?

I just dangle the probe so that it's up against the side of the fermenter(s). I've done a couple of basic tests and concluded that the wort will be roughly 2c higher than the air temp, so I set my STC accordingly. I often have two fermenters (20L jerry's) in the same fridge, in which case the...

How long can you leave hopped cubes for?

Also taking a stab here, but I would guess perhaps fermentation would eliminate the 'grassiness'. Dry hopping is usually done once fermentation has slowed/completed so there is not enough yeast activity to absorb or alter those perceived flavours if done for an excessively long time.

Dry Hopping - Should I steralize?

I've don't sterilize and haven't had a problem. Only thing I'd add, is wait until fermentation has slowed a bit more. I find you lose some of the aroma in the fermentation process if you dry hop while yeast activity is high.

    Bottling the brew

Should be fine loot. Temp control is more critical in the early / middle stages of the ferment, not so much at the end. If it does get to the early / mid 20's under your house it will effectively act as a diacetyl rest which will be beneficial.

    Christmas Lotto 2014

Cheers Judanero, thanks for the feedback, I had some floccing issues with this one. I used S04, and it's not the first time I've had it fail to floc out on me. Poured cloudy right the way through the keg. This was one of my 'Hop Discovery' brews. Relatively same grist, using a hop I haven't...

    Bottle Conditioning Temp

Any chance of scoring an old fridge, even a dead one? A dead fridge with a couple of ice bricks in it should keep it at a decent temp.
