Old-time brewing.... according to the BBC

Actually, there was an edict in Tudor Times (and earlier) that Brewers and Bakers had to provide good and fresh Balm when asked. They were all sharing (and selecting for) good balm with each other. So it's a very basic version of yeast breeding and strain selection...

    Herbs in non-hopped beers

Tim T - if you are willing to expand out to mead's, then Sir Kenelm Digby's 1669 manuscript for mead recipes is chock full of unusual recipes with herbs...

Practicing with new kegs until brews are ready

I sterilise my keg well, add 4 bottles of Bickfords Peach Tea Cordial and then top it up with water. Everybody loves the stuff. It's very very refreshing and even looks like a beer and pours a head...

How Much Beer Do You Drink?

Usually about one standard drink a night... On the weekend, between 0-3... About every six months I might have a blow out and have 6-7 and get tiddly... I mainly brew for the people around me in the Medieval Re-enactment group I'm in...

Australian boffins brew up a hydrating beer

Also here: http://www.australiantimes.co.uk/news/news-in-australia/australian-scientists-brew-up-hydrating-beer.htm I dont even want to comment on this, lest my brain explode... How much money did Griffith waste on this useless pile of dribble... *head explodes*

    Burgers....

A lot of these burgers fail the 3 finger rule... Stack 3 fingers on top of each other vertically and stick it in your mouth. At full jaw extension you cant get any more than 3 in (I certainly cant) So even when compressed, why are a lot of burgers taller than 3 fingers? Hell I'm seen them...

Jao The Ultimate Beginners Mead Recipe

I usually avoid anything with too much of a Eucalyptus taste. I'm super-sensitive to the taste in the mead afterwards.

    Mangrove Jack Pear Cider

I do a version of the Mangrove Jack Pear Cider. I use the concentrate from the pack, then jack that up with 16L of Coles/Woolies Apple juice. I add a decent yeast mutrient, 5g of Malic Acid, and CY17. I find the CY17 drops out a bit quick and seems to give a decent mouth feel. If I'm feeling...

    Warm apple pie

With the cinnamon, I found there is a great trick to this... Cinnamon sticks (as we mainly know them as) is Cinnamomum verum, or Ceylon cinnamon... It's quite hot and yeah, after a couple of days does get too strong... The heat from them, I find a lot of people percieve it in brew as the taste...

    Sweetening Keg Cider

One question... Why do people keep mentioning Aldi Juice - I've noticed it's really not worth travelling to an Aldi for the few cents a liter I get off compared to the Coles/Woolies Homebrand Apple Juice... Or is there a taste difference I'm missing here...

    Death by Homebrew

My Theorycraft here is that they were probably collecting the heads to use as a fuel/solvent rather than throwing each batch away, and perhaps mistakenly they drank a full bottle of pure heads, which would have given those symptoms. A batch of spirit with small amounts of Methanol would have...

    Fermenter Stained

I tend to do 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of napisan, fill up with hot water, and leave overnight... I'm doing this been every batch. Doesn't seem to be a problem and keeps them looking spotless...

    RecipeDB - DrSmurto's Golden Ale

I used Brambling Cross, was a disappointment... I've used Zythos, Galaxy and Nelson Sauvarin to great success... It's (to steal Ross' quote) a good vehicle for testing an individual hop's properties...
