    Immersion Heaters

I just held it by the 'triangular' shaped 'head' thingy and pushed it through as deep as possible. Couple of times my fingers got into the mash but otherwise they stayed out. Seemed to work well enough. So I only heated as deep as the heater 'head' thingy allowed.

    Immersion Heaters

Thanks Beer Belly - used them yesterday for my brew. Great little units. :icon_cheers: As a matter of fact, yesterday when I brewed I missed my mash temp by a couple so I plunged one in and kept it moving through the grains until I hit it. All seemed to be OK as I hit all my gravity targets...

    Wyeast Problems

Thanks for all the info. Bribie, yeah it is disheartening. Looking to go that one step further in my brewing using a greater variety of yeasts by using the liquids. Will try again after the next brew. Stuster, I was actually trying to follow the process similar to the one you outlined but it...

    Wyeast Problems

Yeah tried that too. Even though there was no swelling of the pack, tried to make a starter and had no luck with that at all.

    Wyeast Problems

I had issues with a Wyeast Munich Lager pack last weekend. First time I tried using these liquids. Followed instructions carefully and also left it overnight to swell - no action at all 20 hrs later. Had to revert to a dry yeast. (which started fermenting quickly and is still going strong..)...

    Electric Element Questions

A friend of mine bought and imported them from O/S. I'll have a chat to him and see if he can bring in some more if you are interested.

    Electric Element Questions

I'd do what Thirsty says. I use two 2400 W over the side immersion copper coiled heaters, small compact units which bring my wort up to a great rolling boil in no time at all. I just place a length of timber across the top of my kettle and hang them over it and secure using small grip clamps...

    Three Times Lucky..

Saw the sparge ring in action at a brew day. Think I might rework it using my old copper mashtun manifold to ensure I get good coverage over the entire surface of the grain bed. Don't know whether the elements burnt the wort or not - couldn't notice any odd smells or flavours during or post...

    Rainwater Pump Advice

+1 for Screwy's cheap option - works well. Hot water entering the top of the tank doesn't readily mix with the cooler water beneath.
