Craft Beer On The Sunshine Coast Qld

BUMP - Heading up next week to the SS Coast. Any places to buy decent beer? Staying at Cotton Tree. Is the best I can hope for a Dan Murphys nearby?

    VICBREW 2014

As a NSW brewer I was perusing the scores and saw that category and the scores. Said to my Dad 'I would be pissed to get 2nd/3rd/4th with those scores!' Predicting a Vic clean sweep in that Cat with those scores?

    Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clone

Steeping is mashing with a bit more attention to the temperature of the water, just follow the written instructions and you will be sweet!

    Whats In The Glass

Ages well too. Starts out as a hoppy brown but mellows overtime to the malty side of things. Very drinkable even 6 months in.

Castle Hill and NSW State Homebrewing Competition 2014

Sometimes the glass can obviously affect the head retention/perception. Most judges if head is an issue will consult with the other judge to see if they pick up the same problem. They may also pour more in from the jug to see if that raises the head. What you're saying shows exactly why your...

Castle Hill and NSW State Homebrewing Competition 2014

Deficiencies in one area can bleed marks in others, not just that area. Two examples: 1. I entered an AIPA last year that had 90g of dry hops and was therefore very cloudy. Lost some marks for this in appearance but the impression meant that judges went looking for other issues that may or may...

Castle Hill and NSW State Homebrewing Competition 2014

Having judged the wheats on Sunday morning paying close attention to the style guidelines really is the key to doing well at comps. A lot of US wheats with banana and clove etc. Some great beers that don't score well because they miss the mark on style as mentioned by others. Awesome job by...

    Removing Dextrose and LME

Ditto above with emphasis on switching to using DME which definitely is less susceptible to oxidation.

As Barls says, looks good. Adding hops can bring out CO2. Wait a few days and smell.

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot - Fermenting in Open Squares

Its not exactly fermenting in the back of the toilet block. Looks like a reasonably well sealed room, no doubt supplied with filtered air under positive pressure. No doubt an initiative of the marketing department, not the brewers

    2014 July Lotto Tasting Thread

Cheers Goomba for the kind feedback. The detailed analysis really helps and its hard to get outside of the odd competition. The recipe is constantly being tweaked to get the best out of it. This beer is set for the NSW comp later this month so hopefully the judges there will agree. Thanks again...

Given the recent chatter about Marks Homebrew changing ownership will this affect the drop off point? I will be travelling to either Newcastle or Sydney next Friday depending on the answer. Stew

What Are You Brewing - 2014

Adaption of Dr Smurto's Golden Ale with Rye. Using Kohatu and B Saaz, this beer tastes like lime splice. Also trying out a new base malt I got through a mate. I may be wrong but I think it is similar to the Schooner malt sold by Barleyman, made as a one small batch. Recipe Specs...

MrsGrumpy is going away for 2 weeks.

Its sounds piss weak but I usually come up with similar plans but by the end of the time end up missing the wife, getting sick of waking up with stinking hangovers, and looking forward to a meal that involves vegetables. I have indeed gone soft in my middle-old age. Stew
