First go at a custom recipe - oaked porter. Feedback please?

Hey guys, I'm a bit of a trial and error brewer, and after having a look at what grain was available at my local store, I came up with this recipe. The percentages of the grain were just estimates for what I thought 'looked right', there was nothing empirical about it. Although I haven't used...

First Biab attempt - one query before take off

Hmm... seems as though everyone has their own ways of doing similar things. Just ordered the Bilko urn. $300, figured it was going to cost me close to that for a decent burner from beer belly plus a stainless stockpot. I love the fact I have just eliminated the need to ever buy gas. Woop...

First Biab attempt - one query before take off

Hi guys, I am in the process of upgrading equipment, and plan to buy a 40L Bilko urn from ebay to make 23 litre batches. I have found this great recipe (below) as a jumping off point for my first BIAB. I have no issue with anything except for how much water is actually required for mashing in...

    Whats In The Glass (commercial)

Trying a bunch of new beers over Easter, this is one of them - Wells Banana Bread Beer. This isn't my pic, and it must have been the most aggressive pour in the world to get that kind of head, mine fizzed out after two minutes. Have to say I am pretty disappointed with this one, great aroma but...

    RecipeDB - DrSmurto's Golden Ale

Wow! Just wow... Dr Smurto, you are my hero. Made 20 litres of this brew and it was first successful batch of beer after messing up so many, I must say I'm bloody relieved! After 5 weeks in the bottle, this beer is highly sessionable... great head retention, the citrus from the Amarillo is...

    Whats In The Glass (commercial)

Both of these beers are pretty damn phenomenal. The Trappistes I would only have for an occasion, but i'm going to make Fullers a regular. Maybe not the Golden Pride all the time as its pricey, but the ESB is a damn fine beer also, IMHO.

    Whats In The Glass (commercial)

Not my picture. Drinking the La Trappe Quad tonight as Dan Murphy's got in a few more 4 packs. Had sampled once before in a gift pack, although many months ago. It's a pretty interesting beer. I found that the flavour progressed once my palate had become familiar with the flavour profile...

    24 Caret Beer - Wtf

A moronic ploy designed to appeal to those inclined to unbridled Hedonism and an unrelenting consumption for non-renewable resources? <_< Despite the value of the gold, I very much doubt the beer itself would be of a quality reflective of the price. The prevailing question is... Why?

    Free Craft Glasses At Bws!

I dig it :) I just bought 2 cheap sets of Pilsner and Weizen glasses, and except for lagers I drink most beers out of the Pilsener glasses. Couldn't care less if they aren't suited to a certain style, just like the look of the glass, admittedly. Here's my chalice. Got it with a 4 pack, the...

    Free Craft Glasses At Bws!

I'll have to agree with a couple of opinions here and say I doubt that these style of glasses dramatically accent the flavour profile of any beer. Maybe beer experts could tell me otherwise. Only real beneficial factor would be containing carbonation in some of the Belgian and Trappist beers...

    Free Craft Glasses At Bws!

I'll just throw in my objective 2 cents worth here for the sake of defending glass styles and say without being pompous or instructive, that although the Trappist style goblets could appear as having no practical qualities other than being grandiose or pretentious, theres a few design purposes...

First Kit Great 2nd One Not As Good, Why?

I made a Coopers lager at this same temperature range with a brew enhancer pack and a specialised lager yeast strain. As I later found out, the strain was designed to work at 16 degrees lower than my wort temp. I may as well have not even bothered, a month later I tasted, and it was absolutely...

    RecipeDB - DrSmurto's Golden Ale

Hahaha... It's going to be super difficult. I've been settling for Coopers sparkling ale lately, as i've been collecting the longnecks for my brews, and have enough of them to keep me going for a while. I'm just really interested to compare a James Squire golden ale to this batch, after it's...

    RecipeDB - DrSmurto's Golden Ale

It's at 0.0... Unfortunately don't have a keg, can't see myself getting one in the near future as i'm an unemployed uni student. Patience seems to be the main tactic in this game, i'll be sure to take another reading Tuesday before crash chilling. @bum, Had done so... I've noticed this...

    RecipeDB - DrSmurto's Golden Ale

Okay, so I used the other hydrometer, the one I had previously used is so far out of whack it's not funny. I had totally different reading. Maybe should have tried the other one first. It's still a little high though - 1.018. Is that at all unusual? This was the recipe for a 6L boil: 250G...
