    Chilli! All Things Chillies.

6 days at 30C constant using the ferment fridge and got loads of chillis to germinate in standard potting mix in seedling trays. Jalapeños, orange and choc habs. Also perfect conditions for germinating eggplant and capsicum seeds. Use another fridge for the other vegies at 24C. It's a great...

2017 Hop Plantations, Show Us Your Hop Garden!

The correct answer is, whatever the plant wants to do. If you attach it one way and it wants to go the other way, it will. You people need to start herding cats. :P

Rye Malts - Who's Playing With Them Lately?

Sorry, missed this. AHB app failed to notify me (le sigh). I don't use rice hulls unless rye % is above 30%. So for a standard rye GA grist of 55/20/20/5% (ale/munich or vienna/rye/crystal) I wouldn't use rice hulls. No doubt this is setup dependent, i (still) use a 55L willow esky with a...

2017 Hop Plantations, Show Us Your Hop Garden!

My hop plantation (vegie patch, chook run and half the backyard) was underwater on the weekend due to the flooding. The Victoria seems to be fine, the Chinook emerged from the ground looking a little grumpy to be woken up with cold water. Time will tell how they deal with this but they have been...

Make your own Calcium Hydroxide? Yeah, right...

Rainwater at 4.7 is very low unless I've misread something. Edit - think i have misread. Confusing another thread about low pH tank water. What is the pH of your water only?

Make your own Calcium Hydroxide? Yeah, right...

I'm a tad suspicious of a pH reading that low for water. What reading do you get if you test vinegar? Should be somewhere between 2 and 3. Take 7g of your homemade calcium hydroxide and dissolve it in 1L of water. The pH should be around 13.

    Recommend me a new sanitiser

OT - that's quite dilute for etching.

    Recommend me a new sanitiser

OT - i use piranha solution regularly in the lab. Great for cleaning the glassware. Can get a little frisky if there's too much organic material present. Conc sulfuric acid and 30-50% hydrogen peroxide. Fun stuff. Hydrogen peroxide doesn't work by releasing free oxygen as oxygen doesn't react...

    WTB ~100L Barrel/s (Melbourne)

Once you do get 100L barrels you'll wish you had bought 220L barrels. More barrel aged beer is never a bad thing.

Rye Malts - Who's Playing With Them Lately?

Brewed a 100% rye for a single malt comparison series with a bunch of brewers. Mash was like glue and despite an almost 1:1 ratio of rye to rice hulls it was a very slow sparge. Resulting beer was viscous, like olive oil and rather than being spicy tasted a lot like canned pears. From memory it...

    WTB ~100L Barrel/s (Melbourne)

Yalumba no longer sell them. I even tried using a few contacts at Yalumba but was told no.

2017 Hop Plantations, Show Us Your Hop Garden!

Never tried growing hops in a wicking bed, my hops have been in the ground for 9 years. Edit - They need space to buildup the extensive root system. 40cm of soil is not a lot for such hungry plants. My wicking beds are brilliant. Currently have 12 made from wooden onion crates and am setting...

2017 Hop Plantations, Show Us Your Hop Garden!

Have you tried to grow anything that deep rooted in a wicking bed before? Love my wicking beds for herbs and vegies but they are reasonably shallow rooted plants. Hops have a monster tap root and a habit of spreading so will take over your wicking bed completely.

    shiraz concentrate for sour beer

News to me. There is sulfate in juice but I'm not aware of any sulfite. Sulfur chemistry of wine is what i do. Sulfite in the form of PMS is added to grapes in the picking bins in most vineyards so it's there from the start but that's added, not naturally occurring. I'm always up for new...

In quest of a proper stout

I remember that beer now, the green bullet gives it away. It took out 1st place in the Dry stout section of ANAWBS 2008.

In quest of a proper stout

Agree although that link goes to a newbie thread for me. I'd try and find the recipe but anything beyond basic typing is vastly too complex for this terrible app.

Heading to Europe - Birmingham, London and Normandy - Any Suggestions?

Great idea. Also visit Saint Malo nearby. I lived in Rennes for 6 months as a student and lived on breton cider and galettes. There's a boat that goes from Portsmouth to Saint Malo.

    Food Gardening

Used a whole round bale of pea straw to mulch the vegie garden. Does a great job of suppressing weeds and for $55, a cheap solution. Raised garden beds are all wicking beds.
