    Need help! Brewing Troubles

I'm not sure dog hair is your issue. I have two cats and find cat hair in nearly every step if the brewing process. I have not noticed a specific change in my beers since brewing with these cats. Furthermore, if the hair is on the hot side it is most likely sanitised anyway. On the cold side...

    Pale Ale taste?

Panzerd18 is correct. Pale ale simply refers to being paler than what was before it, which were generally dark beers. Use of coke during the kilning of malt allowed for paler malts and therefore pale ale. I would argue a British pale ale or bitter is a balance between ale, hops, and yeast...

Dedicated Herms Guide, Problems And Solution Thread

Hi all, I am thinking about going HERMS. Is there any reason this diagram wouldn't work? I would only control the temperature of the HLT and I think I would probably insulate the tubing as well.

    Help with IPA

To decrease your gravity you can adding some yeast and DME, try to get the yeast back into suspension through agitation, add more fermentables, add more yeast, etc.

    Creating your own recipe

IanH's Excel spreadsheet is an excellent place to start. When I teach people how to kit brew I generally start them with John Palmers basics (replace base malt with light extract): Half a pound is 225 grams and this is for 19 litre brews. If you do 21 litres go with 250, and 23 litres 275.

    Small Volume Extract Wort Boil

I agree with Manticle. If utilization is such an issue then look into extracts (which I would like to). However, Mr Wizard suggests pH as an issue to boiling hops in just water, so then why not add lactic or other acids? He writes about it again in another question. Braukaiser says that...

    Confession

I am a bit surprised as well. Cascade is the quintessential craft and home-brew hop. On paper I can see the argument against it as being catty, but in the glass I cannot. I can see how one could get burned out on Cascade, but not really dislike it. I, however, dislike Galaxy. I get too many...
