Milking The Cow Beer Festival In Toowoomba

So who's all coming & for how many/what days? I'm up for all 3, but leave pass from the Minister of Housing for Friday yet to be approved... It'll be a good chance to catchup with AHB members and put a face to the avatars... The problem is I don't know what you look like & vice versa! :ph34r...

    Goodbye Qld Brewing History

Another favourite is the old "leave the premesis unsecured until vandals & homeless take over/wreck and the council orders us to demolish" trick... If they did up the old floor malting and produced speciality runs for the craft brewer market, I would buy it.

    Goodbye Qld Brewing History

From the Toowoomba Chronicle yesterday. Barret Burston Malting will depart from their 115 year old site in Toowoomba, to the new Pinkenba facility. This will close the book on one of Toowoomba's most historic businesses. I drive past these buildings everyday. They have not been maintained to a...

    Yeast Country Style

Slightly OT, but relevant to 'show us your woodfired oven' Mines a malt dryer/roaster + starter hotplate.... Best part: Cost =$0 for material & energy. I BIAB on it & the potbelly all day & all it costs it wood which I collect free. Pictured: First crack at home grown & malted barley. Half...

    What About A Hammer Mill?

So no BIAB? On the coarse screen you get a cracked barley + about 40% flour by weight, fine is 95% flour. It's adjustable. Good to hear it should be OK... Thinking about Malting our own grain after receiving terrific tips off these forums. Is a mash filter just a fine mesh to the false...

    What About A Hammer Mill?

Would one of these work for milling grain for brewing? Its a portable Hammer Mill, 3 point linkage & shaft driven. Has screens for coarse/cracked to fine/flour. We use it to crack barley for pigs & cattle. Does 1 ton in about 1 hour (shoveling it in the top by hand) Im not into AG yet...

    Strawberry Beer

I did a strawberry lager earlier in the year. Racked about 10L onto 1-1.5kg frozen stawberry seconds from our garden, for a week @ lager temps for secondary. I would agree from previous threads that strawberry "detracted from the taste of the beer rather than complimenting it". I am glad I only...

AHB Articles: How to make malt at home

Yep, flame is diesel driven with a thermostat. Can run on plain air. It cuts on & off as the temp drops. The air is from a 3ph electric blower. If you blow grain with plain air at 100% humidity & you will actually moisten the grain. Flame makes it quick + dehumidifies. Ranges from 0-80degC or...

    Whats The Best Water?

Read throughthe article Cheers for that. Will be going through more of it soon. I see it does make a difference. Ive brewed my regulars with them both more than a few times, Ive always liked the rain better, which i spose that article explains; lighter beers lower ph & . I reckon you can taste...

AHB Articles: How to make malt at home

Im going to do this, looking forward to it. My family grow barley & have been thinking about turning it into beer for a while. Dunno about butchering the clothes dryer tho. The Missus wouldnt be impressed. We dry our seed in a commercial dryer, flame driven. Can crank it quite high, though not...

    Whats The Best Water?

I brew cans & extracts, moving to grain soon for fun, a big boiler is on the way. No more saucepan. I dont know about the idea of adding chemical salts to my beer... If I could be bothered adding to a brew, hops is about it 4 me. Im into fish also & know its best/healthiest to not add to much...

    Whats The Best Water?

Simple one; What sort of water is better? I have options of Rainwater (very soft) or spring/bore (very hard) Ive always thought beers brewed in rainwater tasted metallicy/cleaner in a similar fasion as most town water compares to rainwater. So have prefered to brew with rainwater. i have...

AHB Articles: How to make malt at home

What size is the white tub you use to water & drain at the start? Do you fit all 7 kg in at once? On the water it 3 times a day for 3 days; Does that mean its under water in the laundry tub consantly & drain & refresh at each of these times, or fill the container up & let it drain out each...

    Cleaning Bottles

My 2c: One of my uncles is a rinse 3x coldwater & reuse... never has problems, tho a quick turnaround on use to rebottle. I do something different, taught 2 me by another uncle brewer; -3 rinse on the bottle after use (and I must admit sometimes they sit a bit onger then after use -use hot if...

    Considering 1st Ag

Ive always had this idea to grow some hops also & make brew which is 100% hand made & grown... But for me, ultimately it comes down to time & cost. I major reason I brew to save $, and Ive gotten the whole can process down to a pretty quick turnaround. A good can + temp control + age = a...

    Considering 1st Ag

About $400 per ton. If it qualifies for malt u get more, if it doesnt you get less & it is used for cattle feed... Anyone reckon there is a market for mail order; raw barley, from a single plot (not blended) & no pesticides etc?
