    Not Getting Much Head

He logged out after only six hours ! Dear God, were you expecting him to pull an all-nighter ? And WTF are you talking about anyway? The only thing I can see that's coounter-productive here is Troopa's posts, and they weren't directed at the new member in the slightest (Ok, perhaps he was a...

Huh ? Potentially the answer to this question is ALL about grain.

Mate, it's CONVERSATION ! You know, the stuff that people did before TV & Playstation (I know, it's ironic that I'm typing this to an internet site instead of talking to my family). His question is being addressed. What's the problem with adding another two bob's worth?

Add: You should really boil the tea after you take the grains out. Maybe not essential for a small addition, but good practice nonetheless.

First Extract Going Down Tonight Hopefully!

With a 30 litre Urn, your next brew consideration should be to use 3kg of grain and ditch the liquid malt entirely. You could turn out a 15 litre all-grain batch with the gear you have now, plus the addition of a voile bag (for BIAB-style brewing). Just a thought........

    Not Getting Much Head

I found that my early brews lacked head, and suspect that the glues & resins from the labels may have been the culprit, so all bottles were given a good clean with bicarb and a bottle brush. Could be my imagination. It appears that the greater the usage of grain instead of liquid malts, the...

First Extract Going Down Tonight Hopefully!

Reports suggests that hop utilisation is more effective if your boil is around the gravity that your final wort is going to be. So really you could use a five litre pot, add enough dry malt to reach 1050 (or whatever), do your hop boil with that, and throw it all into the fermentoer with your...

First Extract Going Down Tonight Hopefully!

So youre only using 200grams of grain and the rest is LME ? you dont need to boil a full batch, you can just make a smaller batch in a stovetop pot, and add ice/cold water up to 20 litres (or however much your batch is going to be). Which means you don't need to 'no chill'.

Is Specialty Grain Really That Good?

Sound advice. In this day and age, remote location isn't an inconvenience when Aussie Post can do the leg work for ya. And when you order, don't hesitate to get a full kilo of crystal, instead of some pissy little amount - you will use it up soon enough. A darker grain is also handy to have...

    50l Keg Conversion Options

Why the need for insulation ? If you're doing BIAB (as I suspect - the bag;s in a photo) couldn't you just place a wire trivet into the keg so the bag isn't touching the base, then spark up the burner a couple of times through the mash to keep the temperature up ? I use a pot that only just...

Oh Jeez, I Think I Got Carried Away With Sugar

That's a mighty impressive OG for a cider, you will need to handle with care when it's time to drink it. But as mentioned, you might need some specialty yeast to make sure it ferments out fully, and isn't too sweet. Fermentis t-58 is designed for high alcohol if you cant get your hands on any...

    Maltodextrin

Hello Jamie, how's your basic chemistry understanding? Wikipedia's entry is worth a passing look-see. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dextrin For what it's worth, if you want to take your beer-making to another level, you might want to focus on unhopped malt liquid goo, and also LDME (Light Dry...

    Im New At This

"Best Yeast Practice" aside, for a new brewer, simply sprinkling a measure of dry yeast particles over the surface, then sealing your fermenter, would be the best, and most straight-forward advice. Don't get too bogged down in too much information for now. The checklist for you should be: A...

    Im New At This

Yes, absolutely it will be different. What you are measuring (crudely) now is the ambient temperature of the room, but when you have a barrel full of water, the overall thermal mass of liquid will not fluctuate as much as room temps. 20+ litres takes quite some time to change temps. You're...
