My Second Brew - Swapping yeast?

Not that I have years of experience and dozens of brews under my belt but so far my only bad brew so far consisted of a coopers draught and kit yeast. Although I still have hopes that time will mellow it out I will not be touching that combo again. Vote 2 for a top shelf yeast.

    Coopers Mexican Cerveza

Just bottled a basic Coopers cerveza, 23 litre brew, cerveza tin, 750g dex, 250g of LDM and fermented at 17 degrees with Nottingham yeast. Hopefully it turns out nice and lightly flavoured as it is for my significant other who refuses anything with flavour. Just put on a "plain Jane" Canadian...

    My First Brew Attempt

FG will depend on yeast and other factors, 1.012 seems in the realms of normal. I wash bottles as I go then sanitise with starsan just before bottling, a half a dozen squirts from a spary bottle per bottle, sit for a few minutes, drain into the sink then upside down into a clean dishwasher to...

    First Home Brew Starter Kit

They seem pretty similar to the coopers kit I got this year. I would ditch the hand capper and get a bench model though if you do get one of them unless you like the idea of belting caps onto bottles with a hammer :)

Need help/advice before buying a 'new' coopers kit

I've been using the new K-collar kit and despite being a total noob am finding it fine. My only complaint is the tap is rather high up the side so the last couple of six packs require me to tilt the fermenter with one hand and bottle with the other. I'm not really sold on the benefits of the...

    lower than expected SG

Well, that's good to know. I guess I should not be paying to close attention to the estimated values.

    lower than expected SG

So I started my second brew 16 days ago and the FG still seems to be dropping. It was a canadian blonde with 1kg DME and 0.5kg dex, 10g willamette at 15 min and 20 at 5 with a dry hop of 15g cascade 4 days ago. It was fermented at 18 degrees with us05. The kit and extract spread sheet gave an...

    Finings: Necessary?

Try agar, usually not as effective as gelatine in cooking but I don't see why it wouldn't serve the same purpose.

You'll be lucky, about 25 km from northgate to capalaba, like to see that done in 10 minutes..... 150 km/h average speed? That said they do seem to have a good selection of stuff and if you have to drive a while to get into brisbane then you may as well spend the extra half an hour going...

    First brew ideas

Well, she be brewing now. Last night I moved the fridge controller thermostat to the side of the fermenter with some styrofoam over it and there barely seemed any activity yet, just a couple of small rafts of foam. About 8 hours later when I peaked in this morning there is a 1/4 inch of krausen...

Thankyou, that was actually at 33 degrees, I didn't think to correct for the temperature. I'll have a look for a stubby holder, I think there are a couple around somewhere.... Personally though I've always believed if you need one to keep the beer cold your drinking it too slow :) I will try...

    First brew ideas

Yeah, it was a rush job. I was just going to chill water so I could get straight to pitching temp and start the brew tomorrow but it turns out I have to go visit someone in hospital after work, that means the choice was to start then and there or leave it till next week sometime... so I got...

    First brew ideas

Well, I started my first brew yesterday, ended up doing a 23L blonde first and decided to use the BE1 rather than start the DME so I could follow the coopers recomended recipes to see what it tastes like as base (well, I lie, I also did the willamette hope boil). Turns out it's going to be a...

How close to 1 or 2 degrees do you have to get to effectively precipitate the crud, it's an old fridge and I'm not sure it's going to be able to make ti down that far.

    First brew ideas

I'll be happy with good beer let alone great. My craftbrewer order finally showed up so hopefully in a couple of months I'll be tasting the fruits of my labour, give it a couple of years of good missus pleasing ale and I might even be able to upgrade to kegs! beer on tap certainly gives me a...

    First brew ideas

So, I'm just gettting into brewing and have a mix of things on hand and hopefully in the post from craftbrewer. My plan is to get a couple of lighter flavoured brews going to keep the old girl happy then get a few more stronger brews going for myself (the lady does not heavy beers). I have on...
