    A Couple Of Questions

Usually I just put a teaspoon of sugar (from a proper measure) into each bottle, fill with beer using the extender tube fitted with the "press down" valve (not sure of the correct terminology) and then give the bottle a bit of a tip upside down a few times. Done, I have never racked but I am...

    A Couple Of Questions

Sorry to revive an old thread but my question is relevant to these repsonses. Bribie I like your routine but have a couple of questions: I have fermenter that has a one piece lid, so there's no way to add anything once sealed without taking the whole lid off. Also I have no way to chill the...

    Alcohol Content

I threw out the instructions on how to work out alc/vol of your home brew and so was looking around the internet for the formula. The first calculation I found is as follows: 1.05 x {(OG - FG)/FG}/ 0.79 Another one is: (OG - FG) / 7.67 With an OG of 1.040 and a FG of 1.004 the first...

    Is My Brew Ruined?

Good point smollocks. The temp has dropped significantly now (around 20-22 degrees) so I am pretty happy with the progress. Not sure about stirring though; I don't take the lid off once the final ingredients have been added. I was told that would aerate the beer, possibly spoiling it. That's...

    Is My Brew Ruined?

Update: I noticed a bubble in the airlock, infrequent by a sign of activity. There is also condensation so I am hoping it hasn't been ruined. OG is off the charts at 1.043 (at a guess) - my hydro only goes up to 1.040. Fingers crossed... Temp is down to 24 so looking good.

    Is My Brew Ruined?

Just read another thread on here and I realised that it probably answered some of my questions. So ok I won't look at the airlock ;) preferring to rely on a "head" foaming and condensation. (Butters please don't choke a kitten or a chicken for that matter!) Also I read it can take a while to...

    Is My Brew Ruined?

OK, so this arvo I put down my 2nd brew and just as I had finished topping up with cold water we had a family emergency and had to leave the house pretty much straight away (everything turned out ok btw :) ) So not knowing how long I'd be gone for at that stage I checked the temp and it was...

    How Long In The Fermenter?

So generally a FG of around 1.006 or lower is ok? Trying to remember back to my previous brewing days. I always used to go by the airlock, but I have read a lot of anti-airlock sentiment on here :) and it makes sense to trust a hydrometer reading over what could potentially be a leaky seal etc...

    How Long In The Fermenter?

Actually make that 1.004 after settling for a bit. (had jumped up to 1.012 before I realised the Hydrometer was covered in bubbles!)

    How Long In The Fermenter?

I put down my first brew in a while on Australia Day (Coopers Pale Ale K&K - Dextrose, yeast from the kit) and I have to go away to a conference tomorrow until Thursday. My original gravity reading was 1.042 and the current one is 1.006 Temp has been at around 26-28 degrees (I have no way of...

    Cleaning Bottles

Ok so I am prepping some bottles for my first brew in a while and I have a few questions. I managed to get some crown seals off my Dad and now have enough to put down my first two brews. Some of the bottles were up in his shed and are quite dirty. Most are just dusty but a few have...

    Returning To The Fold

Well I must say this is one of the friendliest and most helpful forums I have come across. Thanks to all who have contributed their experience to this thread, as it turned out exactly as I had hoped: a jumping off point to get started with some bits of advice that will help get me thinking...

    Returning To The Fold

I am about to put down a Cooper's Pale Ale (International) for the first time in over ten years. I went and bought a starter kit today which includes everything except for bottles. The kit cost $70 and included a brew of your choice. I chose the Coopers because I used to make the Real Ale and...
