Bits and Pieces for sale Brisbane - incl BSC462

Hi all, I haven't been brewing for a while now and I'm clearing out a bunch of old bits and pieces in Rocklea, Brisbane - see my gumtree add for details: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/rocklea/miscellaneous-goods/home-brew-hoarder-sells-up/1062865123 One fridge and the 30L Stainless stockpot...

BCS-462 and 100L Stainless pot for sale - Brisbane

I've packed up my brewing operation and have a few bits left over - mostly from projects that I bought gear for and never made happen! 1. Embedded Control Concepts BCS-462 with temp probe and Aus power supply. I actually bought this from another brewer who bought it new and never got it...

    Disposable filter cartridges?

Has anyone used cheap 0.5 micron either PP or string wound filter cartridges for filtering beer? Assuming contamination issues could be controlled, my idea is to buy a box of like $2-$3 cartridges and (for the times I filter - probably one in 5 brews) just chuck the cartridge out when I'm...

Hops Less Travelled - what are we trying?

I used Ahtanum with Sorachi Ace for a really lemony/citrus focused hoppy golden - turned out real good :) It was about 1g/L Ahtanum against 2g/L Sorachi in the last 10 mins of boil, so maybe hard to define it's own personal flavour, but I definitely got a "more lemon and more grass/woodiness...

    Critique my ESB...

Hey grumpy, My 2c is that West Yorkshire (1469 I think) is a killer yeast for English styles. I highly preferred it to 1968 when I split my last batch of ESB to test them both out. I've never used Williamette and Apollo so really not sure for hops. I find ESB to be one of those styles that...

BB Ale malt - inconsistent size grains?

Thanks all - seems like the consensus is the speed. As I mentioned above, my tests were at the slowest the my drill would kick the mill into action while it had a hopper full of grain. When I get to it, I'll experiment with starting the drill up even slower and dropping grain in gradually...

BB Ale malt - inconsistent size grains?

Thanks Crusty. I'll have another crack when I get home, but I still can't see how a slower speed could greatly increase the speed of grain moving through? It might help for consistency etc, but my experiments point more towards speed of drill = speed grain moves...?

BB Ale malt - inconsistent size grains?

Thanks BB, I'll give that a go. Just weird how it doesn't happen others with the same mill/setup. Grain conditioning it is! Kev I got the mill and hopper from Ross at Craftbrewer. I'll have a chat to him and see what he reckons. My other running theory is that there's not enough weight of...

Alright, a bit of rough, dodgy iphone footage to try and help solve this mystery... http://youtu.be/l0hafIsfbzk

BB Ale malt - inconsistent size grains?

Surely I can't have made a mistake that stupid... can I? The drill is upside down (obviously). I'm 90% sure the rollers drive in towards each other... that's correct, right?!

BB Ale malt - inconsistent size grains?

Well, I have some numbers. And there's definitely something wrong with my setup! No longer blaming BB ale malt... My mill had been set at 1.25mm one side and 1.35mm on the other. I took this down to 0.9mm as others are doing and put 1kg of BB ale malt in the hopper, set my drill speed to the...

BB Ale malt - inconsistent size grains?

Thanks Kev, I thought I was in the ballpark. stakka, as I mentioned in the OP these are grains that I'm inspecting and trying to crush with my fingernails etc and are definitely not hollow or crushed by the rollers. They seem to be passing through untouched. I will have another look at the...
