    First brew :) lager! Questions...

So now Im a little worried! I have used S-23 also. Ive had a Coopers Lager in my fridge for the last two weeks (day 14 tomorrow) and until today, I did not have a control thermostat for accurate temperature control. I was setting a timer to turn the fridge on and off to try and maintain a...

    Stone & Wood Pacific Ale

Ive just finished putting a batch of Coopers lager in my FV. I wanted to try something different, but not too boring, so I added 1kg of Dex, 250g of light wheat spraymalt that I had left over and I steeped 10g of Galaxy finishing hops (tea bag) in 300mls of water and added to the wort (bag and...

Need Extract recipe with limited hops available

I assume your referring to the Black rock pale Ale with 15g of cascade finishing hops. It is still glugging away and I cant resist a smell of the airlock. I swear I can smell the hops. By smell alone, I'd say its going to taste pretty good. Time will tell. I will update this once i bottle and...

Need Extract recipe with limited hops available

So would it be ok to say, use a US-04 on one kit, save the 5g supplied with the tin and use double next time with two 5g packets? (waste not want not!) Or is it just better to use the better yeast all the time? What brand is the T-58 yeast you mentioned? I will look out for it and give it a go.

Need Extract recipe with limited hops available

Tell me, whats the deal with the different sized yeast packets? Most of the packets that come with the tins are 7g, some are 5g, but the better ones, such as a Safale US-04/05 are 11.5g Is it better to bin the included yeast and use the better brands as a new brewer, or just use them and...

Need Extract recipe with limited hops available

Thanks, I feel a but stupid now! I got home after work (with extra yeast in case) and as you said, I should have just waited! It's glugging away nicely! The smell from the airlock raised an eyebrow too! I think it might be pretty good for a basic brew!

    Reassurance with first brew

Ok, I've got a fridge that will fit my FV, I'll have to strengthen the bottom shelf though! So once my FG is stable for two or three days, do I just put the FV in and chill for a few more at 1 or 2c then bottle? Still store bottles at 18 or 20c ? .... Just posted and realised my Q's were...

    Reassurance with first brew

So Paulyman, can you walk me through what you do when you CC and bottle? When, what temp. etc.... I thought the ale yeast died when it got too cold!?? Once you bottle, what temp do you store your bottles at and for how long?

    Reassurance with first brew

Thanks Brosy, Dont worry, Ive checked out heaps of BIAB recipes and once I've brewed, bottled and tasted a few of my first attempts, I will give a few BIAB recipes a go. Or at least a few hybrids (what do you call it when you use a can plus some steeped grain?) when you say "don't be afraid to...

    Reassurance with first brew

Hi everyone, here is a newbie question! (well, just checking if i understand) What is cold crashing? Correct me if I am wrong, but is it when you cool your beer down to a few degrees before kegging? you wouldn't do this if bottling right! Kills the yeast? Wont 2nd ferment in bottle? By the...

Come on then, how do I cook a really good steak?

I'm surprised that you can cook a good steak on a crappy electric stove! (because the simmer-stat switch causes fluctuating temperatures. (may work OK in a thick cast iron pan)) BBQ grille for me! I don't like the risk of ruining a good piece of meat!

Come on then, how do I cook a really good steak?

I don't mean to be smart, but how many chefs do you know? I have heard the idea that turning often keeps the juices rising and therefore traps them in the steak, and heard this from a chef or cook on Tv (fast Ed I think) But I've also learnt from trial and error, that your average supermarket...

Come on then, how do I cook a really good steak?

Well Im no expert, but I fire up the BBQ with the two burners under the grille side and set them at about 3/4 and shut the hood. Wait until the temp gets to 200 or so then open up the hood. Prepare your steaks with some oil, salt and pepper and rub it in both sides. I like mine medium, so I put...
