I soak any funky bottles in bleach or pink stain solution. Usually works. Otherwise I have cut the plastic handle off a bottle brush and I shove this brush in the cordless drill and give each bottle a buzz with a little bit of the solution in the bottom. This will clean any bottle.
try putting your hydro in plain water to test the calibration.
As far as the brew goes, leave it for a few more days and check it again. if it is stable bottle it.
I did this kit previously with BE2 and 500g of light dry malt. It turned out very nice and was a good drop after 1 month.
I have the same coopers kit in the fermentor at the moment as follows:
Coopers Bitter Kit
1.5kg morgans pale liquid malt extract
150g crystal steeped
12g Goldings teabag...
Morgans Ironbark ale with 1.5kg of liquid amber malt and Saf us-56 yeast makes a really nice easy dark ale which is way better than Carlton black. Otherwise buy some Tooheys Old, empty a bit out the top of each bottle and top them up with piss. That should get you pretty close to Carlton Black...
I did a coopers lager with 200g of honey. I turned out quite strong but still drinkable. Instead of buying a 15 l fermenter i just converted a fresh wort container into a fermenter. (insert a tap into the bung and drill a hole in the lid for an airlock - easy). It does 11.5 - 12 l brews no...
Have a go with Coopers BE1 + 500g light dry malt extract. I did a coopers bitter with this combo and it came out great. You could also try cutting back on the dry malt (say 300g) and add 150g of crystal.
As for hops I would try fuggles or goldings for a english style bitter. You could boil...
I tend to use a hydrometer, but not always. However, my father and both brothers in law don't use them at all and I don't think they are knobs :D . In fact, they make some great beers. :beerbang:
I had a similar problem previously where I underprimed about 15 bottles using dry malt extract.
I took the lids off the offending bottles, added 1 carb drop and re capped them. The bottles did foam up when i put the drops in but i just put the new cap back on as quick as i could without...
I put a 'wanted' sign up on the notice board at the local supermarket. A couple of days later I got a call from a guy who was looking to get rid of 120 old king browns (crown tops) he had sitting in his garage. He also threw in a bench capper all for nix. Great score I thought.
