Removable Oak Cladding

Removable Oak Cladding

As promised multiple times, a set of pics to demonstrate how the jacket I made is removable. Reason being that wort and other stuff can get in the cladding and fester after a while. I made it removable so that it can be washed down and so that the keggle can be cleaned easier too.

And as a man who doesn't really like drilling more stainless steel holes than necessary, I chose to return from the HEX through the keg handle at the top.
nice, need to make myself one of those to help with temps during these 4degree melb brew days.

Honestly, didn't cost much either. Just a bit of Tassie Oak from Bunnings, bunch of wood screws, sealer, and a bit of patience.

and polyurethane foam from Clarke Rubber, for added insulation, as well as something for the jacket to clamp into.

Been thinking about doing this for some time, but making it permanent.
It's beautiful work ..

How stable is the temp ?

Did you shave the inside edge of the slats so they didn't have a gap when placed on a curve ?

Hey BOG, temps are pretty stable. But in order to make it removable I haven't put any cladding on the underside, and therefore it's not as insulated as it could be. However, I have performed a single infusion with no recirc before (a tragic brew day when my pump discharge nozzle snapped off) and the temp dropped from 68 to 63C in 45 mins (1degree/9mins). Bear in mind, it's the PUF layer that provides the best insulation, not the oak.

I didn't have to shave the inner edges. Reason being, when the slats are fixed onto the metal ribbon on a flat surface I measured them to be 4mm apart such that when they're curved they have 0mm gap on the inner edge. The compression of the metal ribbon around the cladding holds them tight and maintains the gap at 0mm.
