Hi all,

Trying to sort out where all my sugars are going missing, was wondering what the likely hydro reading is after mashing/sparging a 3.9kg grain bill, my Dr Smurtos Golden was 1061 pre boil 13lts, 1072 post boil 10lts into fermenter, 21lts 1031?. I think my efficiency needs looking at, that's why i was wondering about the initial hydro reading. Just for info, have a 15lt pot used for mashing on the gas stove, transfer/tip into 20lt lauter tun, sparge, boil 13lts. Any ideas greatfully accepted.
P.s. Have fly sparged and batch sparged the good Drs.

Cheers
Briby

It sounds like your boil volume is restricting your sparge volume, which is resulting in a lot of those lovely sugars being left in the mash tun.

With a 13L pot I would make 10L batches.

Thanks Adamt,
Am considering a bigger pot, have been told 15lt should be ok, 25lt should give more sparge water. Why are all pots s/steel and not aluminium.

Cheers

beerbelly does aluminum stockpots
