I'm looking to brew Denny Conn's Rye IPA in a few weeks and wasn't able to get any mt hood in my last order. What would be a good substitute for the mt hood? I've got some US hallertauer, but read they aren't a good sub for mt hood. Ive got a bit of hallertauer hersbrucker, but probably not enough. Any advice on the US hallertauer? I've also got some D Saaz, B Saaz, Cascade, Amarillo & Nelson Sauvin I could use, not as a substitute obviously, but any one tried any of these in combination with the colombus hops?

Cheers

Dave

You could go with the hersbrucker or saaz and drop the FWH if you are running low but having brewed this recipe a couple of times I would be tempted to just leave it out. Ive found Mt Hood the be very neutral but grassy on the nose and the columbus does over power it in this recipe.

What ever you do the recipe will still be great and rye is awesome :super:

+1

The recipe is awesome as it stands, but play around with the C hops. it's comes down to a personal prefs. GO TEAM RYE!

Cheers for the replies

I might not bother with trying to replace the mt hood and go either some amarillo, Nelson Sauvin or B Saaz, I'll have to mull this over with a few beers methinks...

Hersbrucker is the one. So when you get you hands on some Mt. Hood it also goes well in a few other styles such as a Pilsner.

Liberty
one of the better US hersb. crosses.
has a tad more alpha than the current HH as well
hope it rings your bell
