Was looking at using bronze wire mesh for a filter sceen in a hopback and was wondering if there are any issues regarding toxicity I should be worried about?

Bronze is usually copper and tin. Tin is pretty safe. Certainly wouldn't be any more toxic than brass.

Bronze does get used a lot in hot water system plumbing/pumps, but I seem to recall that there may be some issues with ph of the solution being used, and definitely with some of the stronger cleaning solutions.
I was advised against it when starting out by a number of plumbing outfits for these reasons.
But as long as you just rinsed it out with hot water (which is all that really should be necessary I guess) it would probably be fine at least for a while.
