Does anyone know of a List on this site that tells you what yeast is in the bottle and if it can be used to make a starter.

e.g Hoehaarden, is the yeast in the bottle okay to step up?

I remember finding that site years ago when I started with liquid yeasts.
IMO it is much more reliable to either purchase yeast (White Labs or Wyeast are readily avail in Oz) or get a culture from a fellow brewer as you know where the yeast has been and that it has been looked after and more than likely more viable than something that has been in the bottle on a journey half way around the world before hitting any distribution network in Oz.

Kris England's site is another source of information. He has been active on AHB and is BJCP Continuing Education Director.

Unfortunately, it doesn't show whether there is a bottling strain used or not.

therook,
If you work in Melb city I have a few starters lying around of various age. Some probably over 12 months old which should be ok but I would definately taste before using to make sure they are well.

I could bring some in if you want to pick them up.

I'll even do a stoacktake for you to see what is there.

cheers
