ive had to buy a lot of my ingredients as my LHBS doesn't have a lot of the items. and to keep postage down i order in larger numbers.
How should i store yeasr and hop pellets?

Yeast in the fridge. Hop pellets in the freezer.

Seems to be plenty of people keeping dry yeast in the freezer, but fridge for me. They never hang around long enough to worry.

Yeast fridge,

Hops; Freezer is best, else fridge is ok. Keep them vac sealed.

You order in large numbers to keep your costs down. OK

Now you ask how to store this stuff ? I have a troll feeling here.

Posts 4 and 5 here: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f13/oops-dry-yeast-freezer-150685/#post1725293

And under "Dry Yeast" on this page: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Yeast
"The recommended storage temperature for dry yeast is usually below 50°F (10°C) and it is possible to store dry yeast in a freezer because the cell walls have hardened and will not rupture when exposed to the extreme cold"

And at the bottom of this page, a bloke who did it accidentally but said it worked out fine: http://forum.northernbrewer.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=82528

I have heard of people freezing yeast with glycerine, but didn't know i could throw dry yeast in a freezer.
Wonder if this lengthens the storage time or shortens it? Interesting.

Cheers,

I store my dry yeast in the freezer as well. Latest beer pitched with frozen us-05 fermented out fine if that counts for anything.

Felten, great to hear an actual example from an AHBer. What's the longest you've stored dry yeast in the freezer then used it successfully?

Longest? No idea. This one in particular had been frozen over 6 months.

I honestly don't know if its best practice or worst, but it seems to work out alright.

You know you're going to get cited as proof of some almost related statement later on, right?

I store mine in the trub of my previous beer in a plastic bottle next to the kegs at about 3 deg.
The fact that I know it's loosing viability constantly makes me get my shit together an brew another batch before its rooted. Plus I get brew completely style inappropriate beers.
You'd be surprised how far you can stretch a smack pack of 1056.
