smack_pack.jpgI just went to my hbs to get some 1084 Irish.

The pack in the fridge was already slightly swollen - took it out the fridge & socialised for a couple of hours - The pack expanded like a balloon, so guessed maybe it had already been accidently smacked by someone...

Just opened to build up my starter & the pouch inside was totally intact!!!
It does appear however to be a pack & a half as you can see from the pic, so wondering if maybe a manuracturing fault, or could there be some other reason why it activated on it's own??

The hbs gave me the pack for free & it's dated Jan 2005 - but I don't want to lose a brew. Any ideas?...

Hmmm saw that one in the shop the other week and put it back and got a different 1084. Danny tried to sell me that one though <_<
I would be a bit suss if the inside pack wasn't burst. I would make a starter and taste it to check it wasn't anything funky, other than that I can't really be of any assistance, not sure what's going on

I had the same problem with a Saisson yeast. It looked swelled in the display fridge, so I decided to take it home and use it myself. It was only a bit swollen.

The nutrient pack was still intact. The yeast was perfectly good: so much so that I rushed out and bought the Belgian Farmhouse ale book as I was so impressed with the yeast I want to brew a saisson or two this year.

Hoops,

Spent $12 bucks on grain & I guess a new yeast will cost me $16 - so guess I'll give it a go if the starter seems alright....

The only ideas I have Ross is to go and see if the HBS has any other (cheap) yeast like yours. I have no close HBS's that supply liquid yeast (or indeed bulk grain) and I need to get some soon. I deduce from Hoops that you got it from Danny's. I have no idea where that HBS is but I know where Lindsay is therefore the only other close shop near you would be Western Suburbs?

Cheers,
Keep on Brewin'

Peter,

Pretty well get everything from Danny & Lindsay at Quality homebrew supplies...

If you want any liquid yeast, I've got a few types now - you're more than welcome to some...
