With my forthcoming move to Mexico I am considering giving Telstra the flick and going totally wireless at the new place. The Galaxy seems fine for forums and is actually a lot quicker for email than the desktop.

For said desktop I could get a prepaid dongle - anybody use this method?

Anyway as an exercise I'm going wireless for a week starting with this post. Bribie last seen prowling the streets searching for WiFi hotspots

I did a year or two ago, used the Telstra prepaid because the reception for all the others were shit at my old place. Forked out for the one with a 1 year expiry on credit, it worked out to about $15 / month.
Can you use your galaxy as a wireless hotspot?

Is that possible? As one who came in late its all a bit new but I had been wondering about sharing bandwidth between devices as I have 1.5 gig for the next 20 months of contract.

Sitting on train and QR WiFi wont let me onto Redtube. Nanny State. Better not try that with the work WiFi when I get there or I WILL be retired

Galaxy should do it... My HTC does.

Wireless hotspot is great, when my landline adsl goes down, I set my phone to hotspot and conect to the phone as I would a normal wireless router, and the phone uses the 3/4g network.

is that 1.5 gig per month? you should be able to get by on that if you're not streaming/downloading much video or music, just keep a tab on your usage.

well if my iphone can do it, the Galaxy should be able to. Just keep it on the battery charger while you use it.

Galaxy can definately do it

Goto settings -> More... (under wireless and network) -> Tethering and portable hotspot

It will chew through battery pretty quick, but if you stick your phone on the charger you'll be fine.

Hotspot boy reporting here:

Worked a treat, I'm on my desktop machine now picking up the blissful radiations from the phone and the faithful Galaxy is chewing through my Gigs as I type

I just can't believe how advanced these new phones are compared to my original

motorola_brick.jpg

The other thing that's got my jaw hitting the deck is just how fast "mere" 3G is, IMHO it's just as fast as the original ADSL Mk 1. And that's on Bribie Island that has always been a bit of a black spot.

Obviously I'll need to keep a hawk like eye on the megs to avoid being rushed by my service provider.

:icon_cheers:

Edit: and of course when I move to the Taree area I can solve the megs problem by parking outside McDonalds at Cundletown. However if I'm doing porn I'll need to get the shockies fixed on the Mazda <_<
Bloody expense, no end to it.

Hmmm maybe I could see if I could live within 50m of Maccas....................... I don't eat pringles, anyone got a spare tube they could send me to make a cantenna?

There's also a Maccas at the service centre at the south end of Taree, just off the highway.

I've got one of those nextG portable hotspots.
$29pm for 4gig as part of a product bundle. Bit expensive other wise ($49)

Fricken quick though! I'm almost tempted to get rid of my ADSL2+ connection at home
