Hi guys,
Just wondering if any of you know some pubs around Melbourne that have some nice beers on tap. The only type of pubs Ive been to that dont just have VB and Carlton on are English/Irish ones. Any recommendations?
Cheers.

I have to recommend the Portland Hotel in the City, on the corner of Little collins and something. They have a James Squire brewhouse in the downstairs part with fantastic beers and great food.

Bells Brewery down the road from the casino on the corner of Moray and Coventry Streets, Sth Melb. is good, too.

Although I haven't been there, I've heard the pub for beer enthusiasts is the Brandon Street Pub in the suburb of Carlton. The pub is close to the city. easily accessible by public transport, and most importantly has the best range of quality beer in Melbourne. The main draw is the cask conditioned real ales, produced locally by Mountain Goat Brewery and Holgate Brewery.

Cheers - Snow

Have to agree with Snow about the Portland.

The Great Britain in richmond is very good. It looks a bit dingy inside but the beer selection is tops. It's the only place in Melbourne which has Little Creatures on tap. Others on tap:
-Mountain Goat hightail ale & pale ale and the IPA if in season
-Coopers pale ale & dark ale (possibly extra stout)
-One of the St Arnou beers - I think the pilsner
-Something called "Piss" - a VB substitute made by a Geelong micro
-A couple of others
- NO VB or Carlton!

Excellent timing on this thread fellas.

I've been lucky enough to get a last minute ticket to the GF tomorrow and were going post exactly this question.

Are there are anymore that people can think of?

St Arnou in the city is good.

I'd also recommened Transport in Federation Square. It hasn't got the best tap selection, but they've got the biggest selection of bottled beer I've seen in Melbourne.

Ask about the "Beer Missions".

just returned from a session at a pub which had this bottle conditioned drop from the macedon ranges......superb! Can't remember the name of the brewery but it has a black bulls head for a logo. There were four varieties, winter ale, pales ales and a wheat beer. For lovers of homebrew I can thourougly recommend.
Also tried a beer from a vineyard called Pike's something or other. Excellent.
Now I'm at home and on a pilsner so i am typing with staggering fingers.....bed soon i think!

Curtain house, 252 Swanston in the city have a large variety. Mostly in stubbies.
They have Leffe Blonde, Hoegarden. kronenbourg, and a few others on tap.
Expensive , but that Leffe Blond is a wonder beer.

cheers

Duke you may be thinking of Holgate Brewery. They used to have supply Brandon St Pub with cask conditioned ale but I spoke to the Pub this arvo and they no longer have it :-(

Kinda sucks... this was on my must visit list.

That would be Holgate. The Winter Ale is awesome - as are most of their other beers.

Hmm, I might have to go past the Great Britain in richmond one day, got some of my fav beers on tap!!

Try Gunn Island Hotel at Middle Park, some nice microbrews on site - and it's right on a fast Tram stop inbetween the City and St Kilda so you can continue the pub crawl (as I did in May) :D
