I had a an old wyeast packet which took a week to swell up.
I've never used it before and I had a bit of a taste of the pure yeast today. it tasted quite strange =/
I could certainly see it being used in a stout, but I'm not sure if the yeast had gpone off / I had left it at a too high temperature.
