Hi guys,

With regards to boiling your hops with the lid of the pot off, lets say you start with 10l water, then after boiling hops you end up with 7l, is it ok to simply add another 3l of water into the fermenter if your recipe was based on 10l?

Regards,
Robbie

Robbie you can use a dilution equation like this

post boil SG/ target Sg * Post boil volume= diluted volume

eg say your end of boil gravity was 1.065 and you wanted it at 1.050 then its

65/50= 1.3 * 7 litres = 9.1. 9.1 litres -7 litres = 2.1 so you would add 2.1 litres to take your gravity down to your target gravity of 1.050. Its not your volume your interested in its your target gravity. Of course you can work out what your gravity will be if you take it to 10 litres but it will be less than your target gravity

Presuming you have the target amount of sugars, yes.

Volume * gravity points = total points

So 1.048 = 48 gravity points

20L * 48 = 960 points

Now you boil down to 17L

960/17 = 56.5, so you should have 1.0565 gravity

So you can check your gravity and work out how much water to add to get to where you want to be
