German pub owner left crying into his beer by tribunal ruling
11.36 am 24 Aug 04

A German waiter who was sacked for drinking up to 100 bottles of beer every day has won a case for unfair dismissal.

The 50-year-old, who had worked at the Unter Taschenmacher pub in Cologne for eight years, admitted that his managers had repeatedly warned him not to drink at work.

The unnamed former employee agreed that he drank up to 100 bottles of free beer a day with friends while working at the pub.

However, a tribunal awarded him 3,000 (2,000) and three months' salary and said the pub had been his 'dream' job. The man also told the tribunal losing his job had been devastating.

Pub owner Rene Sion said he couldn't understand why the court had been so lenient with the waiter.
