Afternoon Everyone,

Could any one point me in the right direction for using hop flowers in an Extract brew?
I've guessed the hop additions as I've never used hop flowers before. Have I used too
much/not enough? at the right time?

Recipe as follows:

Perle Malt 250g - 65 degrees 40mins
Aromatic Malt 110g - 65 degrees 40mins
Medium Crystal Malt 210g - 65 degrees 40mins
2 x 1.5L cans Morgans Unhopped Pale LME
Cascade hop pellets 30g 60min boil
Galaxy hop flowers 30g 5min boil
Cascade hop pellets 15g dry hop
Galaxy hop flowers 20g dry hop
Wyeast 1272 - All-American Ale
6L boil for 60min

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Looks fine to me.

Download BrewMate ... and learn about IBUs and "styles". Turn the "Style Nazi" option on and keep messing with the recipe until all the parameters fall into place.

Your recipe falls into place perfectly as an American Pale Ale.

Do you know the alpha acid content of the flowers? Use roughly 10% more by weight than if you were using pellets with the same aa%.

If you are using a kettle with a tap, flowers can block the tap or tubing very easily so consider a hop sock but make sure it is very loosely packed. I use minimash bags when I use flowers.

Nick: the question was about using hop flowers, not 'what style is this'?

and flowers suck up a hell of a lot of wort compared to pellets.

the aa% is 10.9%. I've got a few hop socks to I'll make sure to use them.
Does it matter when you add the flowers to the boil? For some reason I thought flowers would mainly be used for dry or late hopping.

Thanks for running it through brewmate Nick. I'll be sure to look into buying that.

You are probably thinking of homegrown flowers when the aa is unknown. Since you know yours, you can use as you would pellets. As I said - you need to use a tad more but otherwise it's not that different.

BrewMate's free. It also compensates for using flowers - which I didn't do. So there's a lesson in my uselessness and my inability to read the OP before posting.
