Gooday People
My local hbs is out of Pale malt But they have Pilsener Malt.
I wish to brew Old Speckled Hen English bitter tomorrow. If I substitute Pilsener for pale malt what effect will it have on the finished beer?. Help please
Cheers Altstart

I think it was Darren who said he uses Pilsner Malt for just about everything (but maybe he just brews Pilsners)
Gotta be better than no malt.
Sorry, can't tell you the flavour difference tho.

It depends on the rest of the ingredients. Pilsner malt is lighter than ale and more dextrinous, so it will drop your srm a little and may produce a thinner body.

Unless I'm trying to create an exact recipe, I have no problems using pilsner malt in an ale.

Edited spelling.

I guess you will be adding a fair amount of crystal for a speckled hen clone, so I dont think the base malt will make much difference.

Good day
If available 500 gms of vienna or munich would some extra malt depth but otherwise don't worry (or 100 gms of amber or brown).
