If you're going to Venice, do this. Once you've got a vague idea where your hotel is, throw away your map, go walking for an hour, then try and find your way back.
Best way to see Venice.

in France drink wine, eat cheese, bread and pate
seek out some good restaurants if you can spare the coin
the French take their food seriously !!

if your going to Rome then the catacombs outside the city are freaky interesting
Rome in general just has so much history and Art going on it's an awesome place

i got no idea about beer there apart from you can buy it in corner shops :)

If your in northern France cross the border into Belgium. Beer heaven.

Bit of a francophile myself, only traveled through italy twice.
Haven't been to any french breweries, only belgian and german so not much help there. Alsace would be the place to go i guess. Had some nice beers in brittany too ( and apple ciders). If you are heading to normandy then belgium is not far away. Some good war museums in normandy and the us war cemetery is perhaps the most depressing place i have ever been.
If you are interested in champagne then epernay is the best town to go to, much easier to get around than reims. Again not too far from belgium. French motorways are excellent but expensive.
Beaune in burgundy is the heart of burgundy wine country ( cote d'or) with chablis up near the top. Have been a couple of times to beaune and loved it, however has always been in winter, sister in law went in season and found it less appealing...probably true of most places in prime tourist season. Driving a campervan around a lot of villages will be interesting.
Plenty more to see in france but if you are travelling through to italy then through burgundy is on the way. Not a fan of cannes and surrounds but province is nice. Woke up one morning in salon de province to find the markets set up outside, the food and its presentation is fantastic. Try to plan your travels around town market days, the quality of produce shames what we accept here from supermarkets.
Hopefully something useful anyway
cheers

Thanks guys.
I'm trying to fit in Auschwitz, but Dachau might be easier. Trying to decide on Italy first after France and anti clockwise or Belgium first and then clockwise.

If you can, get to Holland (or is it, more correctly, The Netherlands. I forget.) In any event, go there, and then cripple yourself in some way. If you are severely disabled, you can get a prostitute, paid for by the government, on their equivilant of Medicare. iirc, you can get one per week. Sweet.

I kid you not. Honestly. I saw a doco on it....and most of the hookers that specialise in this type of "home care" are actually quallified nurses, who are also on the game....not the average crack-whore, by any means.

So, the topic question is "Things to dol in Europe". I put it to you, that my post is entirely on topic. Ask me no questions, I'll tell you no lies. B)

I was really impressed with Slovenia. Just around the corner from Venice. The postojna cave was pretty impressive. And Lake Bled is a fun place to do things.

Not so great in terms of beer, but we did camp a night at Saksida Winery, which is a family winery with space for campervans and tents. And a self serve fridge stocked with their wines. Can't vouch for the wine, but the fresh figs were great.

Thanks guys.
I'm trying to fit in Auschwitz, but Dachau might be easier.

Done both. Auschwitz 1 and Birkenau were far more chilling. I think Dachau was a disused armaments factory or something the nazis converted, but when you walk around the fields and buildings of the Auschwitz extermination camps, you have to keep reminding yourself that this vast development was specifically designed to murder people.

Not the most uplifting of experiences granted, but one that kind of stays with you forever.

Takes a day to do it properly, but well worth it.

Thanks Dave, I think you've made my decision for me.

Jesus, so much stuff to try and fit in.

Im with seamad - get that motorhome into the rural areas and get to the markets, they are incredible. The Brittany region is nice - great local culture - food - famous for its crepes. For me the Toulouse Region was a highlight - the Pyranesse are stunning - fantasticly old and secluded villages - visit a place called Carcasone - a medievil walled village - a little touristy but amazing - the region south (Limoux & Quillan) of Carcasone has bizare and fascinating Roman/Cathar history - lots of big castles/ fortresses/ Chateaus - they offer some of them up as accomodation , roman baths naturally spring fed - almost a little bit deliverance in those hills - plenty of local everything down there.

If you see people in the forrests in high vis - you know its hunting day so beware of large poodles - they are very good hunting dogs and more aggressive than we are led to believe!

Oh yeah its France - you can get good food, beer and wine everywhere, enjoy.
