Can you repeat that Bren?
JB,

As far as I can work out there's some electrical interference causing my LCD screen to display an extra 0 deg C after the temp value, it only happens when the temp probe is wired up and the unit is running on 220v AC power (doesn't happen when I power the Arduino directly with a 12v DC supply), see before and after pics:

Probe not connected AC or DC

I'm thinking that there's some interference being picked up by the temp probe wiring, it's unlikely that it's the software on the board.
The probe cable has an outer foil and metal braid I presume to prevent this sort of thing, should I be earthing the outer shielding as at the moment I haven't connected it to anything?

I like your box mate. I am just working on hydrographic printing my boxes and they are doing well. I am surprised how well the film clings to unprepared plastic.

Hey djar007,
That's pretty nifty, do you have to lacquer the hydrographic film afterwards?
I printed mine on Avery waterproof labels from Mathos original build instructions then covered with a clear roll of contact to prevent the edges from lifting, corners are a bit tricky though.

Hey, there is a 12v supply in your box that runs off Mainz? What's the only thing they have in common? Has it been doing it just recently? Or forever?

To avoid these issues I went with a separate high voltage box so my controller has only12v any where near it. A little extreme; yes but it's what they all did with Brewtroller.... or at least when I was on their forum.

MB, can you please post a picture of your control box set up (or is it in this 32page tread so where)

Gday,
is anyone using this controller to delay the start of the brewing?
if so how
do u leave it at mash in for a few hours?

thanks tate

Hey Marksy,
So prior top a few days ago I hadn't wired up the 220v AC side of my control box, the 12v DC supply I mentioned was an external power adaptor that I plugged into the arduino board just to see if I had soldered the parts and new screen in properly - and had no issues with the temperature value displaying correctly.
When I wired up the 220v AC within the enclosure and powered the shield using the 12v power supply in the box I got the temp display issue, it hadn't happened before, which leads me to think that its caused by interference from the 220v wiring inside the box.
I thought that maybe earthing the shielding around the temp probe cable might help?

Ok so this first box contains SSRs, 12V power supply, outputs and temp sensor conection
20140718_193647.jpg
This connects to the box containing the controller with CAT5
20140718_193633.jpg
this box has only the CAT5 connection.

Im guessing these are not still $30. How much are we looking at now.great work btw

I'm working on something super exciting. Well.. I think so. Laser cut box, power supply, SSR, switches and connectors and arduino mega and pre-constructed PCB... Still sorting out a couple of sources. I'll need 30 people to commit up front to make it possible. Working on final costs, but somewhere around $145 I think ( depending on how much I can get the various parts for this might go up or down... I'm most of the way there). I'm trying to find a power supply that will allow enough space to allow two SSRs for those who want to run two heating elements, or to run the pump through an SSR. Box is the same as I posted of my controller above, with 20x4 LCD to boot. The aim is that you receive all the parts needed, and the PCB ( the part that most struggle with) is already built. You wire it all together and presto! Controller ready to brew!

So I guess... Put your name down on a list and PM me :)
this is the original post starting this buy

The original $30 was for pcb's and parts to be soldered on.
The current buy includes all parts to build the controller including laser cut case and no PCB soldering is required also comes with arduino mega.

to put mine together cost me around $130 with an arduino uno

Hi Everyone, a quick update. I received some neutrik style connectors a couple of days ago and made up a mock up to test placement and layout. I initially had them too close together to be easily usable, the larger spacing is not too bad (tested with a couple of people). If you've got really fat fingers you may need to put them in / out in sequence, but the fattest fingers I've been able to test with have been fine ;)

I played around with mounting them vertically or horizontally, but realised just a few mins ago that the horizontal levers would hit the heatsink on one side, so vertical it is! It was also the configuration that tested easiest for access and getting the plugs in and out, so that was handy.

I've been told the custom heatsink is on its way and should be here soon. Once it's arrived I'll locate where to get the holes drilled and then I'll be able to finalise the control box cut outs. Almost there... once I've got final costing on that I'll update the final price for everyone. I'll need to get samples of the pre-drilled heatsink and the pre-cut box before ordering the whole lot and finding out it was done wrong, so just keep that in mind as you eagerly await the controller.

Dave - as far as price guide - I gave an original price guide of $145+postage, but I had not included the heatsink and the temp probe in that, which will be included, and had not planned at that point to use the higher quality power connectors. Essentially it's going to be more than that and I'll update once I actually have a final cost worked out for everything. There's no point giving another guide and being wrong again :)

Some pics of progress!

The connectors:
ControllerSocketLayoutOptions004.jpg

Layout Options for power connectors: vertical positioning on left, horizontal on right (right hand side latches would hit heatsink - not possible). This is the second round the first didn't have enough space around the sockets to grab them adequately / more easily.
ControllerSocketLayoutOptions008.jpg

Realised that power supply at top won't work - the power supply touches the back of the arduino and may short something. ControllerSocketLayoutOptions006.jpg

Power Supply at right - it will show through the front cover, but is out of the way of the mega, which is why it can't be on the left.
ControllerSocketLayoutOptions003.jpg

Putting the power supply at the bottom is an option - potentially could use double sided mounting tape or similar to keep it in place instead of screws on the bottom of the controller?
ControllerSocketLayoutOptions002.jpg

In the various images you will see (if you look carefully ) the lines that show where the SSRs and power supply fit. It's pretty tight in there, but it should will work!
