Howdy all,

over the past couple of days, i've been looking at and considering my options for a replacement unit i may have rooted up on the weekend.

I have the opportunity to get a Stokes brand, portable immersion element with pot hook, 2400W 240V for $80.

Does anyone know if these elements are any good? All i had to go by was the counter catalogue at a local electrical wholesaler, with picture and stats, but can't find much online about them.

I'm hoping they are an ok element, as the cost will save me a fair bit ($50) off buying it, and i won't have any freight cost to worry about.

Opinions??

Nath, I have been using one of these since 1987 without one problem. Used for step masses and over the side in the boil to assist three ring burner. Manticle and BribieG will also and have previously endorsed. $80 is a good price ex GST.

Awesome.

That's what i was hoping to hear.

Cheers,

Nath

Where are you getting it? I'm looking for an immersion element right now too....

Just a local electrical parts place that deal with the trade primarily, but also sell to walk in's...

I think they are called MM Electrical or something like that.

Im amazed i can find one so cheap locally....usually there are **** all options in this town for brewing gear.

EDIT:
Hmmm, a quick google of MM Electrical indicate they may have business in most australian states...

I might start to look at similar trade suppliers in my area too, cheers!

they also had an excellent range of elements that i could install in my pot, but i went with the over the side again for future pot flexibility.

May actually go back and do some research on what sort of elements they can get that will fill the hole left if i remove the cheap $8 kettle element in the pot already that i don't really use much.

The Uxcell thread has some great stuff ideas for fitting well priced elements too Nath. For my technical expertise, if it doesn't terminate in a 240V mains lead (or female jug cord) I'm not confident it's going to happen!!

I'm trying to make friends with a local tradie who specialises in fixing hospitality equipment. He could source all kinds of cheap pumps, hoses, elements, you name it! He's a licensed sparky too, so he can wire it all up as well... Problem is, he's not too keen to do projects out of work hours and his boss is pretty strict (understandably) on his schedule. He is thinking about going out on his own soon, and I'll try and talk him into building some brew gear for me then :)

UPDATE: just in case someone does a search about these elements down the track....

VERY IMPRESSED.

I ordered this element at 4pm yesterday, and had a phone call today at 2:30 saying the element had arrived.
Less than a 24hour turn around time. Very good service.

After all the research i have done on elements over the past few days, i've been informed that the black ones are better as they have better corrosion resistance, and therefore should last longer.
I didn't know this as every immersion element i've ever used has been shiny, steel or chrome or whatever..

Anyway, this element is a shiny one, and it appears very well made, very strong etc. Checked it works, yep now worries.

I got this element for $83 inc GST. It appears like it will be a good brewing partner for my Birko immersion element.

Rubber handle on the element though which i'm not sure about. Obviously a good thing for electrical insulation yeah?
Assuming it'll stand up to the vigours of long usage (boils) otherwise it shouldn't be on the market. I am aware however of other elements (not necessarily handheld type) that get bad reps for not being able to stand up to a long period of usage...

Anyway, if someone out there is after a very well priced handheld immersion element, this one will be hard to beat, as it's $40 cheaper than it's rivals, and i unusually had the good fortune of being able to avoid the freight charge as they just added it to an order that was already in the system for their own inventory.

Stoked. (pardon the pun)

Nice one mate :beerbang:

Didn't get a chance to ring my guys today, will do it tomorrow I think!

B)

Where did you end up purchasing it from?

MM Electrical

They are an Electrical Wholesaler (i think) that primarily deal with tradies, but they are also open to the average Joe Brewer that walks in off the street.

He also mentioned some controllers that i could use to "control" the elements, but all i really wanted to do was just grab another element to replace one i broke on the weekend.

Will go back sometime soon and chat about said "controllers". Heaps easier i reckon than turning the element off and then on and then off to control the boil.

I downloaded a catalogue of theirs last night, and it mentions and shows pics of temp controllers, pid's, data loggers etc....
Could be an interesting business to know about as far as i'm concerned ;)
