So there I was last night, about to bottle my new Maple Porter (mmm...smells sooo good....), sanitising my bottles and fermenter with sodium met, then rinsing them out with hot water from the tap, basically doubling my bottle prep time, when I asked myself: is it really necessary to rinse? Does anybody know if there is a noticable flavour imparted to their brew when sodium metabisulphate is used and not rinsed? If there is, what is a cheap alternative sterilising agent that doesn't need rinsing?

Iodophor doesn't need to be rinsed - don't know about sod. met.

I used Sodium Met' for quite a while, and always rinsed on the premise that the chemical stays actibe for a far period.

For the last 15 batches or so I have been using Iodophor without rinsing - just leave the bottles for 15 mins or so ( I time it by having a couple of quick beers rather than clock watching - much more fun).

It works a treat and is arguably cheaper and certainly easier than SodMet.

I've stopped using Sodium Met,
as it can trigger ashma attacks, if you suffer from ashma.
