A grown man is about to cry,

I had a nice pale ale that has slowly turned sour (light film floating on top of bottle). I sterilise everything except my bottle tops.

What do you guys do?

Do you sterilise bottles tops before capping?

This is about the only thing that I think could have infected my ale.

Never worried about sterilising bottle caps and haven't had a problem.
Only bottle a couple per brew now though.

I always sterilse caps, I fill a noodle bowl, with sterilser and place my caps in it to sterilse, while I fill the bottles.

I'm with Moray. Caps soak in iodophor solution while bottling. I sterlise everything that comes in contact with finished beer, in fact everything the wort touches post-boil, with the exception of dry hops.
