Ideally, how long should an ale starter take before sinking its talons into the wort? Is it as simple as the sooner the better, and what length of delay would you consider 'risky'?

I put a coopers pale ale starter into a dark ale yesterday afternoon and was worried I hadn't ramped it up enough as it wasn't showing any activity when I went to bed, but sometime this morning it put the foot on the gas.

I pitched a second generation wyeast 1098 at 18C the other day. it took 30 hours to wake up then three days to finish the job. Tastes OK out of the fermenter.
