Hi all.

I'm putting together a HERMS system and wanting to get a stainless coil made, pretty much like an immersion chiller . Anyone know any stainless fabrication places in Melbourne that coil stainless tube? Tried a few but no luck.

Going to be diffiuclt to get one made... you will need to find a specialist maker, someone who makes electric elements or something similar

Also... Stainless is not as good as a conductor of heat than copper is...

I would stick to copper...

Not doing copper. I want to be able to clean with caustic PBW etc so i'm sticking to stainless. I know its not as good a conductor but it will last forever.

Apparently these guys can do it if anyone is interested in the future. http://www.embelton.com/. Dont know the price, waiting on a quote. Probably cost millions of dollars

PBW is ok to use on copper. Would stay away from bleach though.

digging this up.
I have come across this SS coil and wish to make a chiller of some sort. Not sure about immersion or flow through or fitting this 1/2 inch OD inside some bigger food grade plastic pipe? Want easy to clean so SS sounds better than copper then just spray with star san? Thinking it will be 'easier' to drop into kettle (50 Litre keggle) and recirculate chilled water through brew with a pump? pond pump 50-100 gph? too much?
Currently cooling boil vessel in a larger tub with cold running water but not enjoying the waste aspect.
Building a 1V with a stand and pulley system for sparging to get out of the kitchen.
 
Its not going to be much good as an immersion chiller, looks like its over 1M long so you would be needing a kettle like a 205L (44G) drum.
If you can find some PVC pipe that you can fit it inside you could make a very effective flow through chiller, mind you its going to hold a lot of wort, just finger counting I got 23L, cant be right, rechecked the fingers and got 2.3 which sounds more likely.

If you decide its too big for you, PM me. I have some thin wall SS 1/2" coil and a pair of pipe benders.
Might be able to work out a trade/sale...

Thanks for pic mash basher. I have seen one similar made from 150mm with a T with a threaded cap fitted that allowed ice to be poured into the cooling chamber.
Will have to do some more reading regards the linked HERMS/ chiller set up which seems to be more like i wanted to make though not too sure if i 'need' recirculating...
Any ADL brewers want a few coils?

No worries.

I recently settled on a combination of a counter flow chiller and a plate chiller.

My process is to whirlpool back into the kettle at turn-off through the counter flow. Depending on the brew, there may a hop back in series as well.

The aim is to drop the wort to 80’ quickly to prevent my flavour and aroma hops turning into bittering hops. This happens in under10 mins.

Following whirlpooling, I add in the plate chiller and push it as fast as I can up to the fermenter. This produces significant cold break. I reckon it helps lock in hop flavour too.

I used to use one or the other. Combining the two is producing better beers. And using half the cooling water.
