Hello all,

I'm a fairly green homebrewer that's been taking baby steps from K&K to Kits&Bits to Extract. I've played around a bit with Hops and learning heaps there but I'm wanting to look into using some specialty grains in the next brew.

Are there any articles or lists or books that detail what grain imparts what flavour/mouthfeel?? Or am I stuck with the one paragraph description from the online stockists??

I'm not asking for anyone to list them all here, I'm sure you all have more important things to do (ie brew and/or drink beer).

Cheers,

BW

This link is useful for comparing grains from different providers - but is US based so would need to be adapted to Aus supplies http://kotmf.com/articles/maltnames.php
I've used it in an attempt to build up my own spreadsheet. I posted my adapted version in the NZ forum http://www.forum.realbeer.co.nz/forum/topics/malt-sub-resource-for-nz-brewers, with attempts to update for locally available malts.
For anyone else reading, please feel free to offer any feedback as its a tool I'm always looking to impove.

Fantastic!
Thanks for that, it's exactly what I need (to help deepen my understanding of brewing AND to whittle away the hours between Ashes innings!).

Thanks a lot for your help.

Many specialty grains are fairly similar to one another. Take a look at this chart: http://www.brew.is/files/malt.html Chart is pretty old, probably a few things missing, but it'll get you started.

Of course the malts are all subtley different, different maltsters, different countries, I'm just hoping it shows that the selection is not TOO overwhelming.
