G,day all.recently I have been roasting my own malts,(Barleypop maker.com).with great results.
So much so that I have scrounged an electric wall oven that I will set up in the shed to roast there and not in the kitchen as the better half can't handle the smell.
But this has got me thinking about smoked malts for brewing,
So on topic, has anyone here smoked their own malts if so how?,
Did you smoke the malts over/with gas or wood fire.
Did you make your own smoker? If so how?.

Cheers ....Spog...

December 2008 BYO magazine has some good smoking info, can't get link to work sorry.
Cheers

Can be done in the same way as you would smoke meat etc.

Be carefull as some woods can impart a stromg flavour

Many years ago in the village of Tamworth I sampled an Iron Bark smoked ale. The amount of the smoked grain was small, but the flavour was VERY strong.

Was in your face as a beer. Every smoked beer I have had since will never compare to that .

I use my cold smoker to smoke malt for whiskey sometimes. Use American Oak reused bourbon staves and you need to dampen the grain to get it to absorb the smoke.
