Hi gents. I'm wanting to try a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clone. Their web site is very handy. They actually give you a really good starting point to replicate their beers. See it here.

It states:
AC: 5.6%
OG: 13 Plato
FG: 2.8 Plato
IBU: 37
Bittering Hops: Magnum & Perle
Finishing Hops: Cascade
Malts: Two-row Pale & Caramel

Has anyone played around with this as a base for a SNPA clone? I need to know how much of each ingredient I should use. I've got a few WLP005 British Ale yeast starters made up. Will this yeast do the job or should I go for something else? Are there any additions you would add to this basic grain bill?

BTW... this will be my 3rd AG brew
Crashed and burned on the first attempt (paint stripper)
Second crack was a resonding success (slight diacetyl note but nothing serious)
Third ... we'll see

WY1056/WLP001 is generally beleived to be sourced from Sierra Nevada. Be a lot more authentic than using an english yeast.

Personally I'd stick with the Skunk Fart recipes around. The SFPA inspired beers I've tried were tastier than SNPA, though I've only had SNPA bottled. I posted a review of SNPA vs LCPA recently. All my opinion though :) I do have a bottle of SN Celebration Ale in the "cellar" (garage), be interesting to try that soon.

im with you in spirit wax

My first AG was over hopped......almost undrinkable

second was great

third next week

I didn't know it was possible to over-hop a beer! :)

There are plenty of "clone" recipes floating around for this beer and I think even if you miss by a touch, it should still be good. Dry hopping is recommended.

SN makes some real winners in my book. The celebration ale is a classic and their bigfoot barleywine is simply splendiferous.

Where can you get the Seirra Nevada beers in Oz?

mikem108 i could be wrong but im yet to come across or hear of a seller/retailer of sierra nevada beers in oz.
for what its worth wax do chase up jayses skunk fart recipes as he has done these to death in various ways and they are a real treat and as kook says are far tastier than snpa not that ive tried snpa but in comparison to lcpa i reckon the skunk fart is way better.
jasony also has a recipe that is very close to lcpa if your interested.

below are a few of jayses skunkfart versions.

250 g 80-90 ebc crystal malt
250 g carapils

14 g cascade @ 5 m

wyeast 1272

jayse has posted heaps more but these will put you in the ball/brew park.

big d

That's a lot of Cascade. I might try the second grain bill with the first hop addition. Thoughts?

I've done a fair few of them and I like the second grain bill better than the first, the first hop bill for bittering, but the second hop bill for late additions, usually setting the flavour and aroma cascade additions to use up all of a 100 g pack.

hopping becomes a personal taste thing.have a look in the recipe section on jayses yakima chief demon ale.very heavily hopped and i tried this in adelaide and it blew me away.it was unreal but is a hophead lovers brew.
a few of us ahb members have brewed cj,s hourglass which is also heavily hopped but is an unreal brew.
fwiw try the 2nd recipe with the 1st recipes hop additions to see what you think and go from there.if you rack from primary to secondary you could have a taste and if more hops required for your taste you could dry hop in secondary.

cheers
big d

and a method given to me by chiller is to add x amount of hops at flame out and let them soak for 10-15 minutes before cooling the wort.this method adds heaps of aroma.

Cheers guys. I'm sold...

Don't think they sell them here.

I had this year's celebration and a Bigfoot 2004 that somehow hung around while I was home for Christmas.

some guy on one of the US sites emailed the SNPA brewer and got the actual grain percentages and hopping schedule a few weeks back - here it is (i forget which site i got it from)
the crystal percentage is quite high so maybe a 64 mash is called for.
northern brewer or simcoe would work instead of the magnum.

excuse the yank imperial stuff

Never seen them here either, but I'm going to check again tomorrow night.
The yanks sure rave about SNPA, the recipe looks like a nice pale ale but I'll have to try the original.

For what it's worth, Little Creatures Pale ale is at least as good as the original SNPA. At least in my opinion. I think SNPA is the beer that first turns people onto craft brews since it isn't too extreme but is definitely very different to most everything else you'll commonly find on tap.

little creatures is very close to snpa that the difference is not a great deal gor ofr a lcpa clone but use northern brewer instead of chinook and you be fine and add a few gams at flame out
