I've noticed that some people seem to know how many sg points a particular ingredient might have on a volume of brew,is there a table available to work this out?

i could be wrong, but i think the internet version of www.howtobrew.com

You could download brewing software which usually has this feature. I personally like Brewsta, mainly because I wrote it but it is also open source and cross platform.

American sites list extract potential in points per pound per gallon or something like that. A measurement that's a big old pain in the ass for the metric enlightened.

Ray Daniels book Designing Great Beers has tables, again need conversion to metric.
