Started out aiming to brew a clone of JS Porter. Luckily for me its turned out much better, my recent tasting of JS Porter was disappointing. The brew went as follows:
1 x Coopers English bitter
1kg DDME
100g Wheat chocolate malt, stepped
200g Choc malt, steeped
100g roast barley
200g medium crystal
12g Fuggles at 10min
US-05 at 16degC for 3 weeks, 2 days at 22degC, then 2 days at 2degC
SG 1.048, FG 1.012, ABV 5.3%
Been in the bottle for 3 months
Appearance - Black with ruby highlights. Tan/coffee head that dissipates to larger bubbles, although a quick swirl brings it back to life.
Aroma - Lots of coffee and chocolate with anise and vanilla hints
Taste - Slight acidic/sour flavour that may be the roast malt. Plenty of coffee and malt flavours. Initially the acidity is prominent but as it warms it becomes creamier. Carb may be a touch high contributing to the acidic feel.
Overall - A nice beer that is bordering on stout territory. I may drop the amount of roast and choc malt for the next brew by about 50%.
