Refractometer readings

My post mash gravity was 1.044 on my refractometer - just ahead of the expected 1.041.
Next day I poured the wort from the cube onto the yeast cake of the previous beer, and didn't take test the OG until I'd done that - because I assumed perhaps some sugars may have settled in the cube. But then when I checked it in the fermenter it was about 1.024. I checked it several times.

Would the yeast change the reading? That much? I haven't brewed for a couple of years, but I don't recall ever having this happen.
 
No. If that reading is correct you have somehow diluted the wort / beer. My money is on the reading being wrong.

BTW sugars don't settle once they are in solution.
