Looks a little like a recipe for Bear Republic's Racer 5, just with a lot less hops.

The way I make similar hoppy US type beers is to have a small bittering addition at 60 (say no more than 50% total IBU) then the rest of the additons split between 20 mins and 0 mins, added every 5 mins.

I also like to add in some munich malt as part ofthe base bill (so typically 5 - 5.5 GP or maris otter then 1 kg of munich) and keep a light hand with the crystal (250 g in the above to total around 22 L final volume, 70% efficiency but you can work that all out in percentages). A touch of biscuit or victory rounds out the malt profile nicely.

Just seems to give a bit of malt complexity without just being crytal vs base and balances out the bitterness and hoppiness nicely.

Also I add both gyspum and calcium chloride to the mash and boil (although recently I've been adding the second lot of salts to the sparge - not sure I really need to with my water and a batch sparge).

Just what I do and am happy with. Recipe at a glance looks OK although I prefer 1272 and a nice malt profile with my US ales.

Oak will be interesting. Not a beer I would immediately associate with oak but I'm all for experimentation.

I'd make it more bitter...say 65-75 IBU. With your OG and that amount of crystal you'll need it. Other than that looks tasty.

My thoughts exactly. Need to up the BU:GU to >1 IMO

Those hops are always delicious though so upon doing that, youll have a pretty tasty beverage.

And similarly to manticle, i normally put around 10-15% munich in my IPA's to help with the malt profile, as opposed to base malt and a large whack of crystal.

Either way, report back on how it all goes.

I just realised you're trying to clone/emulate a particular beer that has base + crystal and presumably similar ibu and estimated OG?

In that case, my advice is less sound. if that's what he brewery do and that's the beer you're trying to make, don't go tweaking too much.

My advice was for apa/aipa in general, not specific to the beer you're trying to emulate.

Cheers Manticle. I'm trying to have a crack at the Epic Armageddon. There's not much info on it. I've used what I found on the forums and came up with that.
All it said was a wack of caramalt. Now I read you def don't want to go over 10% so at 8% I thought it would be ok. But I can up the BU and adjust the hop schedule. I no chill so will be doing Argons method for the 10 min additions onwards. But I like your idea of the five minute increments.
As for the oak, Epic barrel aged some for 6 weeks on the NZ inter island ferry and it tasted fantastic. So I kinda figured what they hell, let's have a crack. Yes I'm aware oak is not suitable in IPAs according to BJCP.
Cheers all. Will post the new proposed recipe shortly

What's your mash temperature?

With IPAs if you mash low you can balance the beer with IBUs that skim the bottom of the style's parameters.

Be nice to find Epic's mash schedule. They might even tell you if you send and email...

Mash temp is single step 66C for 60 mins.

I have reduced amount of crystal and added the munich. As stated I'm trying to get a beer like the Epic Armageddon, but if by adding the munich could improve it then I'm def up for that.

Cheers guys, appreciate it.
