Not that it's a big deal (or even a small deal), but recently I noticed the ads here have moved from being all brewing related to all kinds of cr*p. Right now I have a banner for The Iconic trying to get me to buy womens underwear (probably because my partner buys stuff from them). If this is a site income thing then I'm fine with it but if it has no bearing on the wellbeing of the community, I'd rather have pure brewing related content.

Thoughts / explanations?

Google AdSense.

You were correct, the ad came up because your device has been flagged as having a user that might be interested. Purely for revenue.

You can block this behaviour (the tracking) if you like but you'll just get random ads then. I'd stick with the lingerie.

No-script isn't for everyone though. I won't use the internet without it but many don't have the patience.

I tried disabling cookies once. Man, that was hard work.

^get those as well

I'm glad I only use my computer for the stuff it's ment for if that's the case. Brewing and porn. Bring on the adds I say.

I've bought from Kogan once. Yes, exactly once. Ang pretty sure I haven't ever looked up most of the other trash. It's totally random and I'm not yet bothered too much atm since I don't really scroll to them.

What did piss me off was when the site started showing those in the middle of threads and in the spot directly aftere member's sigs. If that sort of behaviour returns I'd have to get ad-block. Until then, our american friends can enjoy the 0.0000000whatever cents per view they get from placing the ad. Just, please don't take it overboard.
I've admin'd a small hobby forum and even that showed only an ad banner up the top. I'm sure there is a sensible limit that can be adhered to in the interest of readability of the forum.

There won't always be advertisers that line up with the profile they have for you. In that case you just get whatever ads they want to give you.

If we get to much crap there are other websites we can flock to.

The ads will refine themselves over time. We also block ads that are intrusive or annoying so if you see that please let me know and I will get them removed.

We haven't implemented any new ad positions either. Everything is setup exactly as we got it.

The issue practicalfool mentions above occurred a couple of weeks ago and I believe it was rectified reasonably quickly. I'm sure he doesn't mean to suggest it was related to the new arrangements.

Thanks, Austin, good to know.

In response to all the "just use an ad-blocker" replies, I don't want to block the ads. If I see something I like, I might actually buy something from the advertiser. However this is much more likely to happen if it's brewing related (right now the banner is for RMIT and I already work there).

How unusal. I don't recall seeing anyone "work" at RMIT before.

Wait. Are you a contractor?

(Not actually asking about your personal business. As you were.)
