Pump Flow Control/elec' Element Control

Hi,

At the moment I'm building a single vessel electric BIAB rig, if you've seen Big Nath's new brew rig it's gonna be pretty much identical to that.

Phase 2 of the build will be the control box & I have a couple of questions.

Firstly, I'll be using one of those little brown herm-it pumps from GB for recirculating and I'd like to have control over the flow rate from the control box instead of installing a ball valve from the pump outlet. My question is, would one of these do the job?

Secondly, I'd also like to have control over the 2nd electric element. The first element will be wired up to an STC-1000 as one element is enough to maintain mash temps. I'd then like to have control over the 2nd element instead of it just being on or off. I am using 2 x 2200W elements from Craft Brewer

Would either of these do the job: (& would you recommend one over the other?)

I haven't used the SCR dimmer, so a grain of salt required.
The voltage regulator @ 3 amps should be fine for the brown pump, rated at 0.9amps. The heat sink is not overly big and the unit may over heat (Id guess it uses a LM338 regulator, which has inbuilt protection, it cuts out if it gets too hot. put a fan on it if it over heats). The main thing to remember with those regulators is that the maximum output voltage is 1.25v less than the input voltage. So if you supply it with 12 volts you will only get 3-10.75 volts out of it. So to get the maximum rated speed out of your 12v pump you will need to supply the regulator with at least 14v.

It looks like it should work.

The solid state relay is a on/off device and requires more sophisticated circuitry to use it to control power output.

The dimmer looks like it will work. I've used the ones like this and they work a treat. Since you want to put it into the control box the one you found is probably better.


With the element controller I have one of the ebay ones. I think either way would work. The SSR setup is a lot bigger with the heat sink, but would probably be easier to mount into a control box as you can keep the controlling pot mounted to the front panel and mount the rest of the gear out of the way. If you go for the smaller ebay one, that one you linked to doesn't have the screw in terminals on it ready for wiring. This one has the 2 ggreen terminals to show what I mean. (just the first match I found on ebay, maybe not cheapest)

Millrat, I've also bought an 80mm computer fan to mount into the box to help with cooling & I'll probably cut some slits into the side of the box too. You mentioned that the SSR is more of an on-off device, but what if it was used in conjunction with a Potentiometer similar to this:

Kev, I just checked the PWM I received from eBay and it has the two green terminals for wiring, they were just missing from the pic. Good pick up!

I should've mentioned that I'd already bought all these items, I figured they were so cheap that if they didn't work then I haven't blown the bank
