Is anyone else having a problem with the search function ?

If you type in a search in the search box you get a list of results.
When I click on one of the result links it ends up timing out.

A work around I've discovered is to do this

Do you search (eg Wheat AND recipe)
Click on a result ( eg. First Wheat Recipe )
http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/inde...heat,and,recipe

I get the following error after 30 seconds
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/cre8ing/aussiehomebrewer.com/html/forum/sources/topics.php on line 814
Change the URL from http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/inde...heat,and,recipe
to
http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/inde...opic=4431&st=15

and you can see that topic.
I've had the same problem on Brewboard.com since they upgraded.

I've tried to look into the problem on the IPB support board but you have to be a member to see the forum content.

Anyone else having this problem ?

Looks like a bit of a bug.

I can search for "Wheat Beer" and it is fine, but "Wheat AND beer" is not.

Cheers

Yeah, leave the "AND" out.

^ Just re-checked and the problem seems to be the word AND (you can search multiple words as long as it doesnot have and in it)

My guess is this happens because AND is used in the SQL query to do the original search.

I'd say other SQL words will not work either (OR, SELECT, WHERE, ORDER etc etc)

Thanks for the responses guys.
All very weird that the syntax of "AND" used to work on the old board, and not on the current version. Even weirder that you get the results, it is just the URL that is formed times out.
I'll just have to not be greedy and specific anymore

I've just done a full index of every topic and post and have changed the search system to use FULL TEXT search functions.

See how you go with that and see if it makes a difference.

Test with both the quicksearch as well as clicking on search and then entering your string.

Still times out with the error I posted when I use a search like <Wheat AND Recipe>.
Maybe it is a bug, or by design.
I checked the IPB Support forums and there is a topic regarding the search function already. However I can't see the contents without a fourm account.

Doc,

If you click on the search button and then search I think that should work fine - thats using the fulltext search.

Unfortuently from this topic Wheat AND recipe isn't the best thing to search for. Maybe I'll switch the quick search over to the fulltext option.

When I click on the Search button and do the search all seems to work fine.
Must just be the quick search functionality. Weird that it gives you the list of results though, and it is only when you click on one of the returned results it all goes into timeout mode.

Yeah I've raised a ticket with them, I'll see what they say.

Maybe it has something to do with my Friendly URL's thing, but you said that you were having similar issues on other sites as well...

Yep. Exactly the same issue on Brewboard. They are running IPB v2 as well.

Ok I just heard back from Invision.

This is a known bug to do with highlighting. They are working on an update and it should be fixed in the next version.

Apparently you can just not use AND and the same results will be given, or you can try using +wheat +recipe

Cheers Dane.
Seems the search is quite broken. The use of quotes doesn't seem to work either (eg. "Wheat Recipe" ) This makes finding stuff quite hard, even when you know key words/phrases to search on.
Hopefully they have a fix soon.

I've found that the "+" and inverted commas make absolutely no difference to a search. the 2 words will be found and all posts containing either of the words appear, rather than only posts with both.

I am getting invision to disabled the highlighting feature (which is causing the problem). The new version of the board should be out something in March.
