Has any one used one of those large spring water containers as a plastic carboy

BB, you thought the debate about plastic versus glass was bad....
Quite a bit or research has been done on gas permeability of high density polyethylene (HDPE) containers versus polycarbonate (PC) plastic too.

The spring water containers Chiefman is querying are made from PC... PC has about twice the gas permeability for both oxygen and carbon dioxide. This can be perfect for the lambic brewer but no so for your standard secondary ferment.....

Read more about it here....

Asher for now :chug:

After reading that link, anything seems preferable to using a new oak barrel. Anyone ever tried aging in wood?

Quick search on oak indicates it's a word which has never been used in the forum, which is odd because it's in this post at least.

oak?

A few posts from GMK should turn up
