Hi guys

I'm doing a 10L batch of 4.8% pale ale. Should I only use half a packet of US-05?
It says to use one packet for 20-30L. So I'm guessing I should just halve it?

Pitching rate calculator is very handy

Personally I would just pitch the whole pack.
Depending upon age of the pack etc, it is unlikely to be a significant over pitch, and this reduces the risk of any problems related to under pitching.
Similarly it is impractical to keep an opened pack of dry yeast for any period of time.

Per Fermentis the pitching rate is 0.5g to 0.8g per Litre, so 5g to 8g for your 10L batch. In other words half an in-date standard 11.5g packet in your relatively low OG beer should be fine. The other half can be sealed and stored in the fridge for at least a few days but I wouldn't keep it for more than a week

Thanks guys

Seems to be a lot of conflicting advice regarding the likelihood of overpitching. I tried to do closer to 8grams for this 10L pale ale.

I actually just pitched yeast 2 days ago on my first 10L batch, a heavy wheat beer. I used 11.5grams, so double what I should have. I hope it turns out ok ! :/

If you do half a pack make sure you've got a good way of keeping the remaining yeast sealed. Maybe even pitch in a small starter and save yeast from that.

Just throw it all in and harvest from it for your next brew, or pitch onto the cake. Too much faffing about ensuring you get exactly half and the packet remains sealed up etc etc.

throw in the whole pack. i used to all the time with my initial 10L batches. worked fine. no yeasty characters or off-flavours of any sort. was always a healthy and fast ferment too.
