hi all brewers and members
thought i might start a picture thread of some english beer gear i use might be of interest to some any comments welcome

note the black handle beer engine this 1 is still under constuction here in aus but it works ok and i made it up from parts easy to get from UK .

THIS WAS WORKED OUT FROM A NON SPECIFIC PHOTO COPY DIAGRAM WITH NO MEASURMENT AS WELL SO IT CAN BE DONE AND THE PARTS WOULDN'T BE THAT HARD TO MAKE HERE IF YOU HAVE GOT A LATHE AND A MIG WELDER.

Nice one Tanked. Where in the UK did you source the bits and pieces and what was the approx cost?

I have a friend at a brewery there and he sent them to me but you can purchase them from HOMARK and HYGENE they are on line and HYGENE has an email but HOMARK only has a fax number .

aspirator landed will cost you around 30 bucks and the spigot around 12 bucks landed so thats cheap concidering no one makes them here in australia .

if enough of the members want to get this gear i am sure they could do a non commercial bulk buy through a HBC yeh!

Hey TANKED,
Were abouts in the mid north are you?
Lovely work on the real ale equipment, got any other brew porn we can look at?

Harry Masons, Birmingham, are also a very helpful source of UK cellar stuff but again, no website AFAIK:

Harry Mason Ltd
217 Thimble Mill Lane
Birmingham
B7 5HS(Road Map)
West Midlands
Tel: 0121 328 5900

I've bought heaps of stuff from them for beer festivals etc.

I can see the use of cask breathers - wouldn't mind a few myself, but I can't see the point of getting any spigots unless you have proper casks (in which case you need a whole heap of other "woody bits"). A cornie keg would serve perfectly well as a cask if the CO2 intake is supplied via a cask-breather. That's assuming that you want to us a hand-pump - at my rate of consumption more beer would spoil in the cylinder than I ever got to drink.

Sean,
Yep that is what I plan to eventually do - get a cask breather and use the standard corny keg for serving

cheers

Iam a aquaintance of kens  I'am sure what ever he mentioned about me was proberly true. :chug: or not.
Anyway iam in Adelaide and have been for 8 or so years before that iam from the same town as your in right now, parents are still there and i go back once a year, never had any other real reason to go back untill i saw your real ale serving equipment. :p

You'll proberly regret telling me were you live now! cause sure enough i'll be around to drink beer from that engine one day.
Till that day happy brewing.

So you don't need the spigot then, which is basically just a way of connecting a gas line into a hole in a bit of wood (ie the tut-hole in the middle of a shive).

It works realy well, I flip the keg upside down, swap the gas and liquid qd's over, and give it about 1 psi of gas pressure. Havn't got a proper hand pump yet tho

shunty and roach

the hand pump is a very simple device and i am sure that with a littel enginuity and a lathe we could get together and take some mesurments using the home built one we could make these up in a few week ends and a dozen or so . I am willing to let all who are interested have a look and i would be prepaired to strip my two down to template up .
they take 30 mins to strip for cleaning and measurments could be assimilated in say a few hours then put back to gether and a pint or two poured .

Yeah, they shouldn't be too hard to make. I've got a lathe back home in wellington (emco maximat 11), was thinking of making one (after i finish the other lathe project - grain mills). Got some scrap stainless kicking around, and a sweet handle lined up already

If you've got a pump, I can't see any advantage in flipping it over. A handpump is quite capable of pulling beer up the beer-post. It would work just like an Ushers' "Fined Beer Container".

TANKED,
I posted a piccy of my hand pump/beer engine here . But thanks for the offer though. Just need to get a cask breather, buy some appropriate sized line and fitting to connect to the pump, connect up to the corny and away I go. Just a matter of finding the time to do it.

Got my ventmatics this morning(thanks GMK) and so will be hooking those up, and also brewing a weizen on the weekend.

Be good to check out your system though tanked when I am up Pirie way.

cheers

Hi Tanked

Nice gear. Those aspirators look the goods. I have a beer engine that I had hooked up to a colapsable 20l water container. It worked well until the container acquired a small hole.

I don't suppose you can elaborate on the contact details the suppliers you mentioned. Googling 'aspirator' shows me how to build a machine to suck the snot out of my kids nose. Perhaps the same principle, not the same design.

Thanks
Bagnol

I have a hi-gene pump, which I have only used one night, when I was sure that we would empty the keg, so oxygenation would not be a concern.
I would be interested in getting the low pressure parts requried to allow me to use this on a more regular basis, as it really is a nice "feel" to the pour, and a nice looking beer at the end of it all.
If anybosy is after some measurements from it for fabricating their own, i would be more than happy to strip it down (very easy job) and measure it all up.
I do not have a phot of the pump here, but it is the same or similar to this one:

True, I only flip it so i don't need pressure to dispense. when i eventualy get a hand pump, the corny will be right way up again (pain to clean the sediment off the underside of the top)
