Ok I am a fairly newbie brewer, with only 7 brews down so far but can someone please explain what partial / mini mashing is?

I have done 2 TCB wetpaks .. are these classed as a partial / mini (they have 17kg malt extract, 100g grains + hops) ????

Mashing is done by putting crushed malted grain into water at a temperature that enables enzymes in the grains to convert starches into fermentable sugars. The runnings are then boiled and cooled, and yeast turns it into beer. An all grain brew requires several kilos of malted grain and a bit of specialised equipment.

A minimash involves a small mash to give that fresh grain flavour to the beer but as it is smaller you can get away with much simpler equipment. You use malt extract (liquid or dried) to make up the volume of your batch.

The grains in the wet packs you have used are specialty grains. They have been modified in the kilning process so that a kind of a mash has already happened inside the grains themselves. When you use them in brewing you are not mashing them but steeping them to leach the sugars and other compounds out of the grains.

Thanks Deebee, so my next question is I guess, what equipment do I need to move to mini mash? I have heard that LHB shops will sometimes mill the grains for you for a fee, but what else do I need?

When I moved to partial mashing the only extra bit of equipment I needed was a largish strainer to sparge the grains in. You've most likely already got a small sixpack size esky to mash in, and a pot big enough to boil most of your wort in.

Good luck with the partial mash, you'll be moving to all grain in no time!
 
To answer your original question the CB Wetpaks are a partial mash as the grains don't nearly add the bulk of fermentables that one might see in a mini mash. A Wetpak is a good starting point, not too hard for some decent results.
